Animal farms and grinders contribute to some of the major sources of lag around the server. As a result, I'm going to be testing some things to help deal with this while also allowing you guys to have and use them.
You'll still be able to have farms, but the number of 'stagnant animals' allowed will be reduced perhaps somewhat dramatically. In essence, you might be able to have 100 cows in a pen (in a chunk) if you need to breed and kill them for whatever purposes. If you log off, however, that number may be culled to, say, 20 or 30. I expect this to have a somewhat significant impact on the server.
The same will hold true with mob grinders. Lag often can stem from players afk'ing at their grinder and coming back when there are 100+ mobs in a single space. I have no problem with mob grinders, but at the size they reach some times, it just hurts the server.
To take a snippet from one of the authors of the plugin in use here:
I'll be testing this myself a bit before putting it on the server to ensure nobody has a sudden farm wipe, but I just thought you guys oughta know why your farms may appear smaller in the coming days.

you are allowed to breed quite a lot of animals in your pen / farm and you can kill them for items or experience. However, if you want to log out, every chunk on unload will cull animals according to limits set in config. This prevents you from just having 500 cows in your base, forever. No. You have to use them or they’re culled to minimum. Unloading chunks happens on disconnect, leaving your view distance or traveling to the Nether.
