Bans are becoming Public

Wanted to take a minute to announce an upcoming change to /find. This was previously only available to Admins, but in our shift to increase transparency, much like with our opening (for better or for worse) of the Promotions forums, players will now be able to see in /find if a player is banned and why.

There's no reason to keep bans a secret from people. It wasn't really a thought-out process making them admin-only; more of a thing that I did because reasons. But we realize the onus is on us to not only ban people with legitimate reasons, but also to be sure we're banning with descriptive and accurate reasons. A small handful of people have been using the "secret of their bans" to their advantage, spreading disinformation about the reason for their ban or the like. In the end, we have nothing to hide, so why hide it.

Now all of this said, of course, there are going to be people who've been banned in the past quickly, and without the forethought of adding a good ban reason. So expect to see a non-insignificant number of people banned with the default ban message or other dumb reasons. If you'd like to know more about why a person was banned, bring it to our attention so that we can adjust their ban message properly.

Bans will also become public when they are executed, in the form of a global message. This should go into effect after the next reboot (or so). If you have any questions, fire away!

Go Forth!

Will this show temporary bans and permanent bans or just permanent bans?

This will show all bans. Temp bans will show in addition to their remaining time left.

As well, this will show all current bans, retroactively. This change isn't just for bans moving forward. Hopefully this doesn't bite us in the ass too hard...
