If I understand correctly, each continent has specific fish that can or cannot be caught with a fishing rod. When you catch a fish that is blacklisted on your continent you instead only receive experience. For things like crops and trees this is okay, but considering the RNG of fishing I very much dislike this mechanic. There is about a 50% chance that you get nothing every time you throw your rod out.

Is there any alternative?

The intent, once I do it, is to properly swap out said 'invalid fish' with a 'proper fish' when fishing. But I just gotta do that thing.
