Fang Creek
some music for background ambiance
It all happened not so long ago... On a dark night, in the Northern parts of the Garama Swamp... A place dark, full of sickening creatures, foul stench, endless rain, and cold mire. The swamps have never really attracted any people - too unwelcome are these foul places. So unwelcoming that the Great Elysium Empire had barely claimed any of its half sunken grounds! But not all people avoid it. Some seek shelter in its cold hollow clutches. And so did 2 wanderers that came from the North... These two wanderers felt a certain connection to the Swamp... Drawn to it they began construction near a thick creek with a foul sulfuric smell known to locals as Fang. Day and night, they worked relentlessly to build what would soon be the gem of the marsh. And so Fang Creek was born! It began with the construction of the Tower or, as it is known by the town folk, Castle Fang. It was the center and heart Fang Creek. Heart of the Swamp...
To it, like some monolith of power, people began to gather... and in a matter of time, the tower was surrounded by a small town that grew by the hour! People occupied the tower, the homes underneath it and worked hard day and night to keep their beloved town ticking! Looks are deceitful in the Swamps and while some strangers are scared off by the view of the tower and its inhabitants - other join the ranks of the town only to find themselves surrounded by the most friendly and helping of people.
And so the settlement grew in a rather fast pace. Its populace growing and with it - the town of Fang Creek. People built closely to each other out of whatever they could find resulting in a rather packed and primitive architecture but still beloved by the people.
All went well! Until one night, one of the two rulers packed his things and without informing anyone - vanished in the mist of the night swamp. Gone he was, never to be seen again... Disappointed in losing his friend the only remaining leader promised his people to lead his town into a bright future. The people accepted him as the rightful ruler. More and more people ventured into Fang Creek. The leader never committed any actions on behalf of his ideas - he would always consort with the town folk and other influential members of the town. United, they chose the path Fang Creek would take. And these actions only unified the people as each one felt responsible in a certain way for the town in the marsh. Meetings were held during the long lasting nights where people would exchange ideas, thoughts and experiences. It was a good time.
Soon word of Fang Creek slowly crossed the continent of Garama and in time - all of Loka. Few noted its founding and growth, but there were those that came to the town in the Swamp with good intents! Shalryx - a town in the mysterious sands of the South sent emissaries with great gifts and in no time soon - an Alliance pact was signed between the two nations - agreeing to trade between each other and aid in dark times.
Despite their love for peace and the sounds of the night swamp, there was a man in Fang Creek who felt a strong urge to commit atrocities in the few lands that belonged to a Great city West of the Swamp - Amberfell. Unwise was this act. The Warmonger convinced many people in the town to raise arms in a "noble" act of war... With great hesitation the Leader, seeing that most of the people mostly the ambitious young raised their weapons, promised to join in...
Since the scouts had always seen the lands of Amberfell empty, they thought it would be wise to claim lands. With primitive armor and laughable weapons shaped in their primitive forges and smiths out of cheap iron and molten rock a raiding party marched at the Amberfell outposts! .....
What horror struck them as a formidable army marched out of the mist wielding powerful weapons, covered in armor surrounded by sorcery... Horrified were the barbaric raiders of the swamp as a legion of justice from Amberfell struck them down...
Hundreds fell in horrified retreat from the superior Elysian Imperial Army that had come to secure its lands. Terrified by their unwise act the primitive people of Fang Creek along with their leader pledged for forgiveness and mercy from Elysium. The Elysium Alliance, greatly amused by this... comedy act, decided to forgive Fang Creek as it was no real threat to it. And so a stable neutral truce was held between the two. Elysium returned to its more important tasks and Fang Creek continued to dwell in its swamps.
Life went on in Fang Creek. Now a decently large town with working industries, multi level farms, labyrinth mines and a busy population, the Swamp people decided to expand their influence through all of the Garama Swamp. Noble expeditions were held deep into the mystic and foggy mires to claim these unfriendly lands for the marsh nation! Outpost by outpost, settlement by settlement, the borders of Fang Creek grew and in a matter of a few months the borders of the brave little nation covered all of the Garama Swamps except for a few regions South East belonging to Elysium. There Fang Creek dare not set foot after the humiliating incident.
Secret paths, havens, tunnels, safe passages, hovels and farms have been established in the Garama Swamp, concealed to the naked eye, known only to the natives of Fang Creek. Many fell in claiming these lands for foulest of creatures call these wet lands their home. You never know what dark thing patiently awaits you in the dense morning fog in the mud fields before you...
And so the days went on! Fang Creek's fame slowly grew and with it - unwanted guests - raids by powerful nomads, bandits and brigands! Fang Creek defended itself as much as it could but its people weren't very warlike despite having warmongers among its ranks that proved useless. People were killed, resources looted, and it all repeated itself. Finally, enraged, the populace of Fang Creek constructed a great wall around its settlement, walls sky high, and impenetrable to any mortal! The swamp town was once more safe!
As times grew darker, raids more constant, attacks from swamp filth more intense, Fang Creek decided to take serious measures in order to preserve the well being of its people - apply into the vast continental alliance of Elysium... Emissaries exchanged words and the answer was heard - it turned out that raids were held against Elysium by the warmongering locals of Fang Creek without letting the Leader and Elders know. These acts led to Fang Creek being denied the privilege. Several statements were placed - Fang Creek must rid of its aggressive and vile members. Upon that, a probation period would be estimated to see how Fang Creek maintains its order and law. After a series of quarrels among the Fang Creek leadership and the warmonger brutes that were responsible for the primary failed attack on Amberfell and many other raids a decision was made... Exile or execution. The warmongers refused to leave and roared in rage, ranting on how they must destroy Elysium for foolish reasons.
And on one night, during a horrid rainstorm, a town meeting was held on top of Castle Fang. Disguised as a simple town meeting, the Leader proclaimed execution. And in a second, all the people of Fang Creek drew blades from under their cloaks. The warmongers were surrounded and cut down by the town folk... A harsh and monstrous measure, but necessary. It was a sacrifice for the bright future of Fang Creek.
With the warmongers gone, the people of Fang Creek expected a return to peace. Wrong they were when in several days a large professional army invaded the North of the swamp. It was the force of New Ibbish... An army that crossed the Burning Sea from Ascalon to wage war on Fang Creek for unknown reasons. Several fortifications were burned down instantly, as the army marched South to Fang Creek. The blow came swift and unexpected. The people of the marsh reacted - an army of conscripts mobilized and marched out to face the enemy. Fang Creek was not alone! An armed force of Copperhead - another town from Ascalon answered the calls of the Swamp and joined the fight!
But too small and unskilled was the strength of the peaceful Fang Creek and its Copperhead ally - the army of New Ibbish crushed them on all fronts despite taking heavy losses. The Leader of Fang Creek, seeing the critical situation - sent forth an emissary to the invading force. And in no time soon all was understood. Turned out the slain warmongers of Fang Creek invaded and raided New Ibbish without the Leader and Elders knowing. And New Ibbish came to avenge the treachery. Upon exchanging messages, both sides decided to end it.
Fang Creek dropped the sword to raise the pen and New Ibbish followed. The gates of the Swamp capital opened to the foreign force and a feast was held. During the feast both sides came to a understanding and a peace treaty was formed. With a small compensation to New Ibbish for the foolishness of the warmongers, the army parted to Ascalon. Peace had finally come! A time to rest and rebuild!
Days go by, Fang Creek grows, gains power and strength. People of the swamp have more ideas and inspiration for their lovely town. All seems well for now. May the spirits of the Swamp guide its people to prosperity!
