Feedback on Nether's Eve 2020

Hey all!

I just completed the Nether's Eve quests and absolutely loved it. It felt so much more alive and integrated with the Loka world than the previous event quests (go all the way to the Kalros RI! Now the Garaman RI! Now the Ascalon RI! Find ALL the items!). Loved the lore and the characterization; it seemed like so much more of an actual story than in previous years, where I seem to remember NPC dialogue feeling very... NPC-y.

My one gripe is the bit that requires an elytra. Maybe I'm biased because I don't have one (since I have to steal everything), but in my opinion, the quests should be able to be completed by brand new players. You could argue that the shrine fight and final boss aren't newbie-friendly, but getting the materials to complete these tasks is easy and can be attempted many times. The necessity of an elytra forces new players to borrow an elytra from a player or beat the ender dragon, neither of which seem fair to me.

Other than that, though, I loved this year's event. What about you?

the quest isnt supposed to be newbie friendly, it kinda requires an elytra, and a general knowledge of the server
I wouldn't say it requires knowledge of the server, as the quests tell you where to go. It's a great tool for showing off features like Shrines.

I would agree with the Elytra thing, however it is clearly designed for people who have a general knowledge and wealth of/on Loka. To kill the Witch Hunter you will need good armor, the shrines and elytra quest also outline this quite well. I think in the future having quests that are new-player friendly would be good, however this quest was clearly for the experienced Lokan.

Happy to see you all enjoyed it. Moskito did way more than me so I can't take much credit. I would argue that the quest is just as accessible as conquest is. Elytra rings are a cool task to add and allowed for more content and a challenging side quest. We also wanted the boss to have a definite level of difficulty so it wasn't just a walk-through. Excited to see what the yuletide brings us :p

Have to agree, good job to all of you guys though. Super fun and well made questline!

Glad you liked it. I think it's fair criticism. Ideally, we would want to loan players items for quests like that. However, we don't currently have the tech to do so and it will take a lot of time for us to implement something like this. Mainly due to the issues around duping items or being able to glitch/keep quest items. At some point, we would like to give something like this a go though. In the end, we had to decide whether to give everyone an Elytra for free or require players to bring their own. Due to the sheer number of active players that own elytras we went with the latter and figured the few newer players would be able to borrow/buy one from members of the community.

Personally I think in a perfect scenario there would of been more than one questline which would of allowed more new player friendly questline to be used.

I don't think that's a shared thought with a lot of other people but I feel an approach with two questlines atleast creates variety and the option for even more quest specific zones (think the castle or parkour)

The problem obviously is maintaining the level of quality and having more content with a time squish in mind sometimes.

Favourite quest: parkour

I want to be able to redo the Witch Hunter, but on higher difficulty and see how fast I can speed run him.

In the future some sort of difficulty progression would be interesting for futur quests, but if we always make quest lines with new players in mind there won't ever be any challenge. Perhaps what Arc suggested could also be interesting. For instance there is a quest line with a final boss, and after having completing it there would be an option to redo the boss in a challenger mode or something for extra rewards. Its just that in some cases it might be a boring ending to have a boss that dies too easily. But for sure making the experience a bit more newbie friendly should be kept in mind, particularly for a holiday quest.

We definitely don't want to create content for one off experiences often. Generally recycling content is a priority as it allows us to make more player experience with more ease.

I think for considerably larger instancing it's doable but for one off events it might be further along in the future.

This being said I personally really like the idea of unlocking increased difficulties, new modes and times leaderboards for parts of the game and I know a lot of other players love seeing some form of a competitive edge used.
