Handling New Members

There's vigorous debate among some of us at the moment on how to better handle new joins to the server. I think we can all agree that while we've come a reasonable way on introducing them to the server, there's still a lot to be done to help new members join. Unfortunately, admins are only on so often so I put this conversation out to you guys for your thoughts and opinions:

  • What are some of the most frequently asked questions from those who join the server?
  • What do you think we could do to better help newbs learn how the server works, find out about towns, etc.

We find that many newbs exit the intro course, then jump out of spawn quickly and build in the wild with no idea how the server works; then they just get raided, murdered, and die. What would you guys change?

We definitely need some more tutorials, but I wouldn't make them mandatory.

Maybe add a room full of warps (command blocks?) that send you to areas that will say... teach you the basics about a town? Or surviving in the wilderness?

We get a lot of players that are first time MCers.

What do you do on this server?
How do I join a town?
Can I have diamonds?
Can I have creative?
Can I have op?

Also, a lot of newbs have no clue about our /mail command. It's pretty useful too.

Usually when people join they ask where they can build, or why they can't build. I don't think I've seen any other questions that many new players have asked.

I think a youtube video would be nice, but would more people watch the video or read the books that are available at spawn?

We could add information about how the server works to the intro course to solve the first problem. As far as getting murdered and raided, there should be rules put in place to protect them. Other things we could do include enabling beds, offering starter kits(small ones ofc), and adding a pvp timer.

I do mean to reduce the intro-chat spam.

Another idea i've always been mulling over is either some messages sent to newbs on timers after they join the server, or 'zones' that, when you enter for the first time, you get a chat message describing some stuff.

These messages would be about things like spawn protection, towns, etc.

I think another problem is most people aren't willing to really EXPLORE spawn unless they're invested in the server. A problem with this is that two of the perhaps more important areas for noobs are the towns area and the rules room, and neither of those are obvious place to go; they just seem like extra-areas that may or may not have anything important in them at a glance.

Yes, but new players don't get generator messages or town motd's though. We could remove one of the welcome to loka messages, because it says that twice.

This is true.

How about we change /rules from what it is to "You may view a full list of server rules at spawn." or something like that?

And while we're at it... (sorry for spam)

Is it possible to delegate perms for each different kit?
If so add a complete rule book to a kit.

Or we could just add all of the rules to /rules. It would help not only the newer players who might have trouble navigating spawn, but people who would like to read the rules but don't have immediate access to it.

Yes it is possible, and this is a very good idea to implement.

If we do this then we can reserve /rules for updates to existing rules or the addition of new rules. A place for that is much needed.

I like the idea of a spot were new rules/modified rules/clarifications can be given. I guess if we give everyone access to a rules book then we don't need them anywhere else.

I do feel the slicer course could do with being more informative and putting better descriptions of the server where we advertise will help to.

Maybe my 'zones' idea will work here best; as new joins make their way through the course, they'll also be sent messages describing the server, towns, etc...

I also think that when players first arrive form the slicer course they should appear on a lower floor, maybe a specially designed room. As people have said before the top floor has little use to new players and them jumping straight in the nether is a little annoying. We should keep the top floor how it is and just make an area for them to come to that has quick access out of spawn and easy access to extra info should they wish to read it. All the compulsory info should be found in the slicer course with it repeated at spawn so they can refer to it easily.
