I think it should be a mix of dirt/gravel/cobble. It would look like a real worn road that way. I can provide screen shot in a few.

Wood is generally used in most towns, so figure it won't clash that much with most towns. Used with full brightness, has fence gates on both sides, and 5 blocks between each lamp post.

Probably not, but that's why you should never use the default texture pack :)

If you don't then everyone builds what looks best on their pack :p

People don't do that anyway? It would be an interesting metric to see how many people use default vs custom packs though.

Well except for specialty packs, most textures are built to complement default. So if you build something to look good in default it'll probably look good using a texture pack.

For that reason I tend to use texture packs where things mimic the default texture pack. I find with a lot of those (including the very popular ones like the one I use), very little changes except for, like, glowstone, cause that shit is awful.

When you install a texture pack and then cannot figure out what anything in your inventory is anymore, well... It's a bit like this

Here's a few ideas I had

My only problem with these is that there aren't any borders under the fences. Makes for a more polished looking road.

5 seemed a bit too wide to me. I don't think these roads are going to have enough traffic to necessitate that wide of a lane. My 2c anyway.

4 wide gravel with a local environment border then fence. Gravel could be whatever material, and I feel that nearby towns should be able to choose material that matches the town as the road gets close. Gravel and or cobble would be cheap initial materials for the wilderness.

Every so often (50-100 blocks?) there is an entrance point which is smooth from inside the road and protrudes out. Fence gate with pressure plate inside the road so the door remains shut after someone enters.

I also like the idea that in a 4 wide road you could stick a nice 2 wide tunnel underneath the road surface for shelters, small farms, etc. They could be accessible via stairwells in the border, like so:

On a side note, is it possible we could get this WG'd? Roads have a tendency to get griefed over time, and I can't see any reason not to protect a huge server project like this once it's built.

Non-square or straight regions are extremely difficult to do, and with the length this road will run, I'm afraid we'll just have to repair it as we go.
