A few ideas for Shrines:

+ Highlight Shrine mobs. That makes them different from surrounding mobs and helps for mobs like Magma Cubes, who (I think) only count when you kill the one that spawned, not any that split from it.

+ Show timer for when Shrine will activate next. Right now you can stumble across a Shrine and have no clue how long ago it was purified.

+ Add a small reward for clearing a Shrine. Incentive to explore the feature, wooo!

Yeah, these count all the larger sizes, just not the smallest ones. I was concerned it may be a bit tedious searching for all the tiny cubes in order to purify the shrine. Can always change this though if you think it's more intuitive counting EVERY mob from the shrine. Only options for highlighting them is spectral or particles of some kind. Both of which feel a bit over the top to me, but would like to hear more feedback.

I could go either way on this one. Part of me quite likes the idea you can show up to a purified shrine and not know that it has just been cleared. Only to find that the one who just cleared it is lying in wait. It means that you are always on edge when you come across a purified one. It also feels a bit more authentic and natural without a timer. On the flip side, it's far more convenient and efficient to farm if you know when it will activate again. Would love to hear others thoughts on this.

Yup! Expect easter eggs and more rewards as we expand upon the feature.

I'd like a timer but only more of a suttle thing, like with the lamps they go down in particles from 100% to 20% but this shrine will show visually it's closer to being ready than others. It wouldn't be an exact timer but a general suggestion of how long its down for

At the very least if somebody else damages the shrine, all nearby players will see a timer (after this morning's reboot), but the intent isn't for there to really be a permanent one just cause you're nearby as that might get kinda spammy so to speak.

Either way, I'm personally pretty excited about Shrines because we can really potentially do a lot with them in the future (and plan to :>)

I was thinking along the lines of clicking the Wither head and getting some sort of time information, not a timer sent to everyone nearby. Obviously wouldn’t have to work exactly like that, and I like @Evil_X ’s suggestion of having some subtle sign of it, like a lamp with particles or the fires slowly coming back one by one. Could even have non-specific messages sent to the player either automatically or via some interaction:

“An eerie silence fills the air.” - Shrine won’t be up for a while.

“Something can be heard from within.” - Shrine will be up soon.

Purely examples, but something like that could fit better with the authenticity of it.

My issue with the Shrine mobs, especially those that spawn naturally anyway like Ghasts and Magma Cubes, is that there’s often other ones around near the Shrine. For Magma Cubes especially, when there’s a bunch of them, it’s not easy to tell which are the Shrine mobs. I think marking these mobs would not only help those who are clearing Shrines, but also draw attention to them for players who have never seen a Shrine before.

Or define a certain perimeter centered on the shrine from which shrine mobs cannot exit.

I also like the particle/lamp idea for a timer.

Add a head trophy whenever you complete a shrine, you can claim the trophy, or maybe another item, all depends?

We have now added everything listed below, making shrines even better!

+ Add a small reward for clearing a Shrine. Incentive to explore the feature, wooo!

  • Shrines now spawn a Loot Bundle when they are purged. Breaking one drops any of a large variety of items from common to Legendary rarity!
    • It is not intended for these to be extremely valuable most of the time (RNG can always surprise you though!). Specifically with Shrines, you're already there generally grinding for nether-specific items, so it's not the intent for the vast majority of Shrine Bundles to be highly valuable.
+ Highlight Shrine mobs. That makes them different from surrounding mobs and helps for mobs like Magma Cubes, who (I think) only count when you kill the one that spawned, not any that split from it.

  • The mobs specific to Shrines now have unique names that show over their heads (so you can tell which blaze is the Shrine one, etc).
+ Show timer for when Shrine will activate next. Right now you can stumble across a Shrine and have no clue how long ago it was purified.

  • Shrines will now give you a little information on the state of the shrine (recently purged, inactive, about to reactivate, etc).
  • The Shrine Health boss bar will now show to nearby players, rather than just to the players who have killed a Shrine Warden.
There may also be a few secrets and easter eggs with shrines too ;)
