Chapter 1: The Test

Xov woke up to the roaring in his mind from his partner, Falanir.

He would not stop telling Xov that he had overslept, Xov just wanted to sleep.

Suddenly, a blue scaly dragon head popped through the open window of the tree, and the magnificent beast turned on eye on Xovious.

“If you do not wake up, I will actually roar in your ear,” said Falanir calmly in Xov’s head.

Xov, fearful of the powerful roar, immediately got up and out of bed, stretching his sore muscles from his long day of practicing the day before.

“That’s what I thought,” Falanir echoed, conveying amusement in his tone.

Tiredly, Xov asked, “Could I have not slept in a little at least, I’m so tired from-”, then, it struck him as to why Falanir woke up him so roughly, today was the day! He and his dragon, Falanir, were going to be tested to see if they were able enough to be sent to the Dragon Rider school that the Rider Eragon had created.

Once hit with the realization, Xov quickly prepared himself, and made sure he looked good, getting a clean, good-looking tunic on, grabbing his Rider’s sword, Islingr, and heading downstairs.

As he walked out into the sunlight of the beautiful day in Ellesméra, he saw his majestic partner flap down slowly and land at the base of the tree in front of him.

“Are you ready, my Rider? Today is an important day for us.”, asked Falanir.

Xov replied, “Heck yeah! I’m excited, we put lots of time into preparing for this day!”.

Xov quickly hopped onto Falanir’s back, and strapped himself into his saddle.

Falanir unfolded his big, powerful, still-growing sapphire wings, and slowly flapped them, rising above the ground now, with slowly accelerating strokes, until he was above the treeline, and then he started heading towards the Crags of Tel'naeír, where riders went to learn and grow stronger and wiser.

As the steady drumming of Falanir’s wings went on, Xov started thinking back to his younger life, and how suddenly everything happened.

He wondered, how as one of the youngest elves in all of his race, he was chosen by Falanir in his egg state to become his rider. Xov still remembered the day like it was yesterday.

He was considered a mere child of his race, but to humans, he was considered a grown man, with 23 years of his life complete. That day was the day that one of the sapphire blue eggs found by Eragon during his quest to destroy Galbatorix, which had been handed to the elves to rotate within their cities and find the true partner of the egg, had chosen him.

He remembered how he touched the egg, how it shook, and how excited the elves around him got, while others got upset that they weren’t chosen. How he was taken immediately to the Crags of Tel'naeír to stay with the egg until it hatched, and be watched over for a short while, to make sure they were safe, and the dragon was healthy. After an hour at the Crags, a blue head had popped out, slowly coming out of the egg and observing its surroundings, then looking at Xovious. Coming near him, touching his hand, and inscribing the Gedwëy Ignasia, the sign a dragon places onto its Rider once hatched, onto his hand.

Xov just knew he was glad that it had happened, because of the connection he shared with Falanir. The mental connection, of being able to talk through their minds, and able to share every moment with each other. It made them best friends.

Falanir, after being silent and just recounting how he was hatched with his Rider, said, “We are here, Xov”,

Xov, now brought back to the present moment, watched as Arya, the elf queen, walked towards him with her dragon, Fírnen, the majestic emerald dragon.

Arya and Fírnen had been their teachers throughout this entire process, as Arya was one of the most intelligent on the topics of Riders in all of Alagaesia.

Arya spoke first, asking, “Are you two ready to begin?”.

Both Rider and dragon replied, “Yes ebrithil”. (OOC: Ebrithil means teacher in the ancient language)

From there, they began their rigorous training exercises, with Arya and Fírnen overseeing both apprentices, making sure they didn’t miss a single thing.

After the training exercises, they moved onto magic, which took some more time, as Xov was not as adept with creative magic as he was with combat magic.

By the time they had completed the magic test, it had already become noon, with the sun high up in the sky.

Arya told them, “Alright, let us sit and enjoy lunch, for it may be one of our last, as you two are doing extraordinary together, a perfect team.”

At this, Xov grinned with pride, along with noticing Falanir fill up with pride as well, and both of them were happy as they enjoyed their lunch.

As they ate, the two dragons conversed, as Arya and Xov conversed, all talking about different things that Riders and dragons deal with daily, it was like a test of its own.

Once everyone had completed their lunch, Arya and Xov walked outside, to begin the swordsmanship portion of the test. Xov was confident that he would pass this test with flying colors, as combat was his best skill.

He was not wrong, after a long duel with Arya, who was one of the best fighters on Alagaesia, they both were tired out, and Xov, with more stamina, had finally defeated his teacher. As he won, he immediately got congratulated by Falanir, and he felt his partner emanating pride.

From there, he took a break with Arya as the dragons did the same, with Falanir passing just as well as Xov did.

Arya remarked, “I am impressed, you both have a thing for combat, I see.”

Both Rider and dragon agreed, and moved onto the final part of the test.

It was where Rider and dragon must fight together, against another Rider and dragon.

The fight lasted quite a bit, with loud clangs and roars from the dragons, and had ended with Xov and Falanir winning.

Arya, stunned, said, “This is truly amazing, you two have created such a powerful bond, and work extremely well together. I am very proud to have been your teacher.”

Fírnen said, “Indeed, you two have come very far. I too, am proud to have been your teacher.”

Both Xovious and Falanir replied, “Thank you Arya, and Fírnen, we are proud to have been your students.”

Arya then dismissed them saying that their ceremony would begin the next week, and they would depart off to learn the deepest secrets of Riders and dragons with Eragon.

Arya said, “You two can have the rest of the week off, do as you wish.”

Xov was hoping to hear that, because he wanted to take a trip to the Beor Mountains, the mountain range in Alagaesia. The mountains were tremendously large, and Xov felt so free there, and he felt as if he deserved the trip, after the hard work he and Falanir put into their training. He also felt like the mountains were calling to him at the time, especially after the combat portion of the test, so he decided to go.

Falanir agreed with Xov, and they prepared to depart immediately, as it was a 3 day flight to reach the mountains.

It would be long, but would be worth it, Xov had a feeling that he was destined to go to the mountains, he felt as if something ancient… something powerful was calling to him...

Wow, you did really good. :D

Thanks :p I plan on just doing one more today, and another tomorrow, just so I can get to the Loka part of my character, and then it'll probs be like a once a week thing from there, or it might be daily, not sure. I'm debating on making it just a huge book on my experiences on Loka, because I have done so much here already. So like, stuff I just recall that I have done, I dunno.

Chapter 2: The Curious Rider

The Beor Mountains seem small from far away, but as they got closer, the true majestic view grew to show massive mountains, larger than anything else on Alagaesia.

As the mountainous landscape got closer, and then under them, the calling to Xov grew stronger, but for some reason Falanir could not hear it.

There was a voice in Xov’s head telling him, “Come… Your destiny calls you… Find me… You’re close…”

Xov, confused, yet curious, shared this information with Falanir, but the young dragon was wary, and told him, “I do not think we should go there, it sounds suspicious and like a trap… Many of Galbatorix’s supporters are still alive.”

Xov replied, “I know... but I have the might of a dragon, and I am a Rider, we will be fine.”

Falanir was clearly unsure, but still kept following the directions Xov was giving.

As Xov followed the call, it grew stronger and louder, until it was as loud as Falanir’s voice in his head, calling him, mentioning a cave.

They were being led deep into the Beor Mountains, in such rugged terrain that surprised both Rider and dragon, because only a dragon could have made it here, and only with the specific instructions Xov was giving Falanir.

Soon, they spotted dark, ancient ruins in the mountains, to the surprise of both of them.

Xov said, “I never heard of an ancient fortress in the Beor Mountains in any of our lessons, this shouldn’t exist…”

Falanir agreed silently, very worried.

As they got closer, they felt a powerful, ancient sort of magic emanating from the fortress. The fortress looked dark and foreboding, with black walls.

They then landed right outside the large gates that led into a cave, and the second they touched down, Xov had a sharp pain in his head as an ancient conscience dove into his mind and broke his powerful defenses, swiping aside any futile attempts at pushing it out like a leaf in the wind, learning his entire identity, and then echoing in his mind, “Welcome, Rider. It is time for you to follow your destiny, enter the cave, and come see me.”

Xov had been curled over in pain, and Falanir was scared because he could not hear any voices, and he was blocked from Xov’s mind during that encounter.

Falanir worriedly said, “Xov, I think we should leave this place, it worries me, and it is clearly too dangerous, you have one of the strongest mental defenses on Alagaesia, and it broke you like nothing.”

Xov replied, “I know we should leave, every instinct in me tells me to, but my body feels pulled to the cavern, and towards the voice… and you cannot fit there, so I believe that this is a quest for me to complete on my own."

Falanir unconvinced said, “I disagree, we are best together, and I cannot lose you.”, and with that, Falanir quickly began flapping his wings, and as he was about to lift off of the fortress grounds, a crushing force immediately pushed him back down, and this time the voice was heard by both of them and forcefully said, “You are not allowed to leave, Xovious must enter the cavern, and come meet me. All who come in his way WILL be destroyed.”

Xov, worried for his partner told Falanir, “Falanir, I think that I should just listen to it… I do not want anything to happen to you. I promise I will be alright, I can take care of myself.”

Falanir was silent for a short while, and replied, “Fine… I don’t see what else we could do, seeing how we cannot leave this area. This clearly is some ancient power, and we should not ignore it.”

Xov nodded, and got off of Falanir’s back. He grabbed his gear, walked to Falanir’s snout, and looked him in his sapphire blue eyes. They were silent for a moment, and then finally Xov said, “I will see you soon, Fal, but if anything happens, I want you to know that I am glad that I have been able to have a dragon, especially one as great as you. It was an honor and a pleasure.”

Falanir replied, “And the same for I, for you are a magnificent Rider, and an even better friend. Stay safe.”

Xov then turned towards the shadowed cave, and began walking forth into the darkness...

Chapter 3: The Call of Destiny

As Xov began to walk deeper into the cave, it lowered into a tunnel that just led straight forward. It had gotten so dark to the point where he had to use magic to light his way.

He muttered, “Garjzla”, and a orb of light appeared in his hand, faintly lighting the way ahead of him.

Even with the heavy elven clothing he had brought with him, Xov still felt chills down his spine as he slowly walked deeper into the cavern. The eerie silence, with the occasional dripping of water from the rugged roof of the tunnel, was all that he could hear.

After walking what felt like hours, but in reality was minutes, Xov noticed a split in the tunnel, with it branching into two different tunnels.

Choose one, and prove yourself…

Xov jumped as the long silence was shattered by the eerie voice in his head. As more chills were sent down his spine, the ball of light wisped out of existence.

Xov, starting to worry, attempted several times to bring the magical light source back to life. After the 4th try, he understood that he must pass this test, and walk forward.

Good… Follow the darkness…

Xov knew it was risky, but quickly decided to listen to the voice and follow the darkness. After his enhanced elven vision adapted to the darkness of the tunnels, he chose the tunnel that looked the darkest and most ominous.

After a few mere seconds, it became so dark that he was forced to obey his instincts and keep walking forward, deeper and deeper into the darkness.

Minutes after he walked into the tunnel, his senses felt the tunnel widening into a cavern, and the temperature rising, getting hot. He noticed a soft purple glow, and continued walking towards it.

He started getting very worried, he was feeling a presence, and it was not a good one. It was dark, full of hate, pain, anger. It was the most ominous thing Xov had ever felt.

As he got closer to the glow, he noticed a large rock, with a hazy, dark fog around it.

Welcome, Rider… I have waited far too long for my next wielder…

Xov was confused, wielder?

His question was answered quickly, the fog from before opened up to him, and embraced him. Xov was wrong, within the darkness was a crystal, not a rock.... And in the crystal, was a slender black blade, with a silver guard. The hilt was a solid black, and embedded in the pommel was a crystal, one side purple, the other side red.

The weapon was magnificent, but it felt… Wrong to him. His blade, Islingr, the slender white blade, was pulling away from him, away from the ominous crystal.

Islingr… Light-bringer… he thought.

Dragnipur, soulreaver… I am the sword filled with hatred and pain. It is time for you to embrace your dark side, Rider. Your presence is needed in another world… A very corrupt world, in much distress. It needs to feel the hate and pain from me, and serve the long punishments that death should be giving them. It needs to see the light from your sword, Islingr. You must fulfill your destiny and go forth into the world, wreak the havoc I want, and bring the justice Islingr wants.

As the blade finished speaking in Xov’s mind, the fog started warping around the crystal, slowly eating away at the crystal, opening up the sword to the air of the cave.

A sharp hissing sound followed, as the frozen sword, stored in the frozen crystal for an eternity, touched the crisp, warm air.

Pull me from the crystal, Rider. Fulfill your destiny…

Xov grabbed the hilt of the slender weapon, and pulled the blade out. As the blade came out, it made a rasping sound, like that of stone grating against the scales of a dragon, and then a sharp ringing sound once fully pulled out.

Xov held the blade, admiring its balance, and elegance. Then, suddenly, the blade pierced into his mind, and merged with his identity, showing him the true horror of what the blade meant, twisting Xov. The only thing that kept Xov in reality, and knowing himself, was Islingr, the light fought with the darkness. Soon, both calmed to a standstill, each resting in his mind.

After the pain subsided, the fog started swirling around Xov.

It is time, Rider. Time to go forth into a new world…

Xov felt himself losing consciousness, and he felt himself falling, except… He never hit the ground.
