The Keeper's Fate

Mairosa

New Member
In every breath she took, in every step, the magic of the Library flowed within her. In circled her being and pulled her closer, deeper into it’s depths. That was the duty of the Keeper; not to abandon the Library.

Mairosa didn't think it was her fault. Leaving her home for a few years shouldn't have done what was happening. The Library should have gone dormant, slept until she returned. But it did not sleep. Instead, it was dying. And with the Lost Library, her.

The fate of the Library and it’s Keeper are forever entwined. Should it fall, the Artifact could not save her.

“Mai…” A voice whispered, pulling the elf from her thoughts. She looked up to see Jedoi.

“Auntie, you made it.” She stated, gazing into the Guardian’s violent eyes.

“I'm so sorry I wasn't here sooner. I heard you weren't feeling well. Are you alright?”

“The Magic of the library is fading.” She stated simply.

“What does that mean?” Jedoi asked.

The Keeper sighed deeply. “I read something recently.” The woman looked at her curiously. “A power Guardians have.”

“We have many powers.” She replied cautiously.

“Remember how the first guardians were put in an enchanted sleep?” Jedoi nodded at the young elf’s question. “I want you to do that to me.”

“Mairosa! Why would I do that?” She replied in alarm. She stepped forward and took her hands.

“I'm dying. I can feel it. The Library is dying.” She whispered as the woman pulled her close. She was enveloped in a hug.

“I can't do that, Mai. You’ll be okay. I will protect you.” Jedoi murmured, hugging the young girl tightly.

Mairosa shook her said. “Please trust me. You can save me. You have to do this for me. Please.” Jedoi released her and stared into her eyes.

“What will happen to you?”

“The Library and I will be put into a sleep.” She answered with a sigh. “Until it can be saved.”

“How do I save the Library?” Jedoi asked, and Mairosa saw the desperation in her eyes.

“I… I don't know.” She admitted, shaking her head. “But there's something I've figured out about Lokans… You’ll always find a way. We’ll always find a way. Even when the gods give us every disadvantage, give what stops us every strength, we still pull through. I'm so proud to be counted among those people…” Mairosa looked up at the Jedoi. “I'm proud to be a Lokan.”

A faint smile appeared on the Guardian’s face. “As am I. You’ll be okay, sweetheart. We’ll find a way to save you.”

Mairosa nodded. She led Jedoi to the heart of the library and stood before a table upon which rested a single book. Mairosa felt the magic circling her being.

“Here?” She asked, and Mairosa nodded.

“We will save you. I promise.”

Mairosa smiled. “I know you will.”

She watched the Guardian whisper ancient words as she took her hands, and she felt herself drifting far off. Caeldris, the Lost Library, sang her a lullaby as she fell into a deep sleep. The song it sung was quiet, calming, it sang of home and of love and of family. It sang of the sun and of the stars, of flame and of the forests. And as Mairosa Istalri finally slept, she thought she heard a faint whisper…
