TotFD Pt. 2.5: Explanations, Inspirations

I've been bouncing around the ideas contained in this post since I began work on this project. Here, you will find the couple little bits of information that I couldn't find another location for, as well as some of my inspirations for the project. I've also struggled to decide when to make this post, as I was unsure where to place these pieces of information individually, let alone when I've compiled them all into one post. In the end, I decided that putting them in a post between posts would work best. Hopefully, this serves as a means to make sense of some of the aspects of this project that would otherwise go unexplained. As this is a more behind-the-scenes look at the Temple, I will be pulling the curtain back on a few things and explaining the workings of some of my ideas. If you'd rather not see behind the curtain, feel free to skip this post. Don't worry; Nothing here will be necessary information for the reader.

The Fifth Other
In part one, I very briefly mentioned the Fifth Other, and presented it as the "opponent" to the Four. In reality, the Fifth Other is not exactly an opponent. As the Four themselves would tell you, the Fifth Other is not even truly an entity. Instead, it is a poetic device used to refer to all negative things the Four oppose and try to guard their followers against (war, disease, famine, etc.). The phrase Fifth Other (in Temple writings) was originally created by Lunvari as a means to make her writing more interesting, but she ended up adopting it into her teachings as a recurring term simply because she liked it. I, on the other hand, created it for two reasons:
  1. I needed a way in the story to refer to negative things without needing to list them.
  2. I hate working with even numbers, I couldn't come up with a name for a fifth being, and "The Five Divinities" doesn't have the same ring to it.
Spheres of Control
This will be a quick one. In both parts one and two, the spheres of control of the Four are mentioned. This is not meant to be indicative of absolute control, but instead a great amount of influence. Lunvari, for example, has control over the sphere of light, which means she has the ability to alter light but she cannot control the sun/prevent the sun from creating light (an extreme example, but it gets the point across).

Inspirations, Influences, Impetus
All of my writing, but this project especially, is heavily influenced by the Elder Scrolls (specifically the work of Michael Kirkbride). In particular, the metaphysics surrounding the Tribunal, divinity, and the universe (a theme I've always wanted to play with in my writing) played a heavy role in the development of the Temple of the Four.
I opened part one with a quote (from a book I have yet to write) that spoke about the creation of the universe and the Primordial Spirits. This idea is based on the entities in the Elder Scrolls known as the Et'ada, the spirits who came into existence at the creation of the universe and (some of them at least) went on to create the mortal realm. During my time learning Loka's lore, I noted a lot of parallels with the Elder Scrolls, which was when the concept for this religion started swirling around in my head. Ideas came and went, but I eventually (with the aid of some shenanigans) got the idea I decided to run with. I had to take some creative liberties with some things and assume some others about the universe within which Loka exists, but in the end I was able to tie things together in a way I feel works.

I'll just finish this post with an open invitation to talk to me about Elder Scrolls lore or lore in general (or join the religion if you want. Gotta get on that faith hustle.)
Part 3 still coming soon...
