Suggestion Town Libraries

This thread is to discuss something that has been talked about and suggested on discord and in game many times. However, it has not actual thread established to suggest the idea.

Nearly every town I've been to or seen has aimed to create a library or museum. The main problem with this is that it's so easy to just take books and never return them an example of this would be basic Loka guides for PVE, Conquest and even basic history of towns/allainces.

My primary idea is be a small area (perhaps 20x20 or so) that would act the exact same as the Loka library, this would allow towns to create guides, lore and history books.

Why add this?
Simply from my perspective, as a town that adds primarily new members to Loka it is painstaking explaining how Loka functions, conquest, Resources Isles etc work. If I was able to have a small library which I know had all basics of conquest or the history of Garama it would save a lot of time.

Wouldn't this take away from the current library in spawn?
I actually believe the contrary, I believe that this would make players aim to create more books in Loka. It goes without saying that the there's no reason for the players to not submit these books to the Library.

The primary point to remember is that a town will eventually fall yet the library will always have its books.

Yes gibon but that's bad role-play, you can say you've never wanted to build a proper town library

EDIT: Yes we're definitely able to use the NPC as a substitute for this but I believe that the implementation of this would help guide towns on infrastructure not to mention would add to the atmosphere new players get when they join Loka

I often have wanted to do this but always have been restricted to making it an owner area in my towns (Which admittedly no longer exist.) I do have one question though. What happens to the library when the town dies? I think at that point it should be open game to steal from as everything in the rest of the town is. +1

This is a +1 and I have maybe a concept for what happens when a town dies. What happens is the books slowly start to “rot” away, as in they disappear from the shelves, and at this point, the books can be removed from the area and taken wherever. If the book disappears before you retrieve it, they are gone forever

This is exactly what I thought, perhaps I was unclear when I said the library will be there forever I meant the spawn library will not ever be removed or regenerated unless the community/staff team feel it's necessary (which is highly unlikely to happen). In the event a town would die, the zone would be destroyed and it would be open season for anybody who is looking to build on their own collection.

Sorta relevant but on another server they had a cool way of building up libraries that we could utilize here. When you placed down a bookshelf it had an empty shelf texture. You would hold a book and left-click it into the shelf, which would now have a filled bookshelf texture. If you right-click the filled bookshelf you would get a message saying:

"There is a copy of [Title] by [Author] here."

If you left-click the filled bookshelf you get a copy of the book in that shelf. The book vanishes from the inventory when it's opened. They re-textured a block they didn't use (in this case endstone) to look like a full bookshelf and have these abilities, and re-textured the bookshelf to look empty.

I think it's a cool system and could definitely prompt more authors and libraries

Was this part of a forced texture pack? If it was then it shouldn't be forced implemented. Forced texture packs are annoying to deal with. I believe that if it is a texture pack then it would best be implemented as part of Loka+. @Skuhoo

@Steve5729 I think I'm aware of the server he was talking about and yes it was a forced texturepack, if this became a feature of Loka+ it wouldn't affect normal gameay at all

That's not how Loka+ works. There's no nbt data available for placed blocks and thus cannot have their textures changed dynamically. I'm not sure how this other server worked, but the only thing that I can think of is that they switched out bookshelves with some other block retextured to look empty and switched it back once a book was "placed" inside.

Yep, they used end stone which was visible without the pack. If that system is less viable here, maybe one like it could be explored. I think it feels better than the current library setup.

I brought this up once before however, I heard a pretty valid argument against making town libraries. The short and sweet version is that it devalues the library in Aladra. I figured I'd bring that up otherwise, totally would be down for town libraries.

This thread has gotten slightly off the original topic, it would be swell if @Magpieman or @Cryptite could give their opinion on the suggestions in terms of feasibility and if it would fit Lokas town layout.

Just a lil' bump
