why is the plural of moose not meese?

What about Canada? I know Canada has meese. I live next to Canada. Alaska has meese too.

This reminds me of the many times I've tried to say Mice and actually said Meeses. (Awkwardness FTW!)
Also...
Why is the word dwarfs used? We don't use leafs, we don't use elfs, (if you do I will steal your hats) so why do we use dwarfs?
It certainly sounds awful to pronounce.
