A Change To Animal Despawning

We're going to be making a change to the vanilla behavior of Animals soon in order to help cull the amount of mobs that are, well, everywhere. By default, Animals never despawn in vanilla MC. Since we have more aggressive mob spawning on these days in order to guarantee mobs spawning all over the world, no doubt everyone has noticed the sheer quantity of animals that're everywhere.

The change we're making is that animals that do not meet the below requirements will naturally despawn like monsters do. Outside of usual requirements, an animal would have to meet one of the following requirements in order to stick around:

  • Animal is named (nametagged)
  • Animal is tamed (thus has an owner)
  • Animal has only been alive for less than 5 minutes
  • Animal is in a town
If none of the above apply, the animal will go away once its chunk unloads. We're giving a heads up about this now because this will result in any farms in the wilds losing their animals. As of now, if you're a nomad, you will need to likely nametag your animal(s) if you'd like to have a farm in the wilds.

This was a change we've always wanted to make, and wasn't only born out of the recent aggressive spawning. Simply put there's no reason to have vast quantities of animals on the server ever since the advent of the Dungeon and Barn industries. It's beneficial for the future of the server to keep out entity counts down, and this means to do that.

Very likely it'll be Monday Morning when we activate this change. Animals will continue to spawn, of course, but they'll no longer persist for long and result in being so prevalent.

Go Forth!

If animals despawn after 5 minutes outside of a town, how are you supposed to take an animal to your barn?
Possible fixes for this: Animals on leads/attracted by breeding material (wheat, carrot, ect) don't despawn. Another possible solution that isn't quite as good would be to make it so that animals in a player's vision don't despawn.

Providing the chunk is loaded (which it will be if you are taking it somewhere) the mob will not despawn
