Client-side Mod Whitelist

Currently, the only client-side mods allowed on Loka are Optifine and Litematica. We often get requests and questions about whether a player can use 'x' or 'y' mod. In the past, our stance has been to allow only the bare minimum to keep life simple for ourselves, but to also avoid opening a proverbial can of worms. If we accept one, then people will ask why we don't allow 10 other similar mods. It also takes time for us to vet each mod and keep checking on it to make sure it hasn't added features that give players a competitive advantage or become a security threat to those who download it. By allowing a mod we feel we are endorsing it and giving it Loka's seal of approval.

Going forward we are going to start whitelisting/allowing more mods and will be opening a new subforum for mods we should allow/whitelist. We feel we have been a bit too restrictive on mods in the past and would like to give people the opportunity to use some quality of life mods to improve their experience on Loka. We will still remain somewhat strict on what we allow as many of our views on the subject have not changed.

Our stance on not allowing mods that provide competitive advantages will remain. Simply put, if it gives players an advantage, a mod will inevitably be forced/required for use to max out possible advantages on the server. This is both a barrier to entry for newer players but also makes us somewhat reliant on 3rd party software we have no control over. It's also not particularly fun for existing members of the community to have to download, update and maintain an array of mods.

The same goes for our views on the security aspect of the mod. As a result, there are 3 requirements that a client-side mod has to meet for us to consider adding it to the whitelist of allowed mods. They are the following:
  • Cannot provide any competitive advantage.
  • Must be safe and secure.
  • Must be updated regularly.
Hopefully, this added flexibility will mean we can allow some of your favourite quality of life mods.

You can request mods to be whitelisted on our new subforum here.
