Why don't we just have custom saplings for the custom trees? We can still have the default saplings, but the saplings that spawn a custom tree with have fancy text on it staying what kind of tree it'll grow.

Sounds reasonable. That'd make normal saplings accessibility heavily depend on the map design and force people who want default farms to settle closer to default forests (and vice versa). Seems fitting to new world's ideas.

For a regenerating forest we could just make it regrow trees in the exact same spot to simplify things. The best time to have the regeneration process take place is when the server is at its lowest point in daily activity.
Or during a server restart

What if someone builds in the forest? Will trees just regenerate through whatever they built?
What if trees didn't regenerate if there was something other than the tree there (or nothing)? I think that would work, because if someone builds in the area of where a tree was, then the tree wouldn't respawn and their build would remain untouched.

Hypothetically saying the regen process could work via chunks, not the entire biome. If there is a player built structure in the chunk the forest won't regen.

I think it would be best to have only one or the other, and I think it fits the new world best to have all custom trees. I personally really like the ideas of saplings with custom names and text that can only grow in certain biomes. If you have a "palm tree" sapling then they will only grow in Jungle biomes, for instance. You can store them if you're outside the biome, but you won't be able to grow them. Sure, getting rid of regular trees would be detrimental to farms, but I think the added color would be well worth it, especially if multiple biomes had multiple types of trees you could grow in groves, for instance.

I also like the idea of regenerating forests. I've always thought it would be neat if forests could grow and expand on their own like real forests do, forcing you to keep cutting them back to avoid being overgrown, and giving abandoned towns more of a "ruined" look and feel. Trees could grow in stages, getting larger over time if they're not cut down. Of course, this is outside the scope of the question, but it's fun to dream =P

That is a cool idea about encroaching forests (not sure how easy to code that, though). I wonder if that might contribute to lag--would it?

It probably wouldn't contribute to lag as it would be updated with the nightly server restart. It's more a question of if Crypt wants to code it

There are tree speading plugins already as I understand it

I think custom trees are a really nice idea, especially considering the intense landscaping and decorating I'm sure is currently going on in the background. I am a bit unsure though about them just altogether replacing the vanilla trees. I do love my dark oak. <3 So, I'd say I'm in favour of the custom saplings idea if such a thing is do-able. But if I had to just choose right now without the possibility for anything like that, I'd say go for custom trees over regular trees.
