Consider Implementing Eu Loka

Ehy, i've been asked to write about this in a forum post so here i am. I'm aware that under here there will be mostly comments against this, but that's normal since those who actively use the forum are mostly from north america. The idea of an european hosted loka has been in my mind for a little more than a year. I talked to Cryptite on discord about it and he has always said that an european loka would be highly unlikely, but that we could have a discussion about it if there was an overwhelming support. Last year i started a petition on change.org (cringe) and got around 14 signs, so i just gave up the idea and started playing anyways, creating my own town which was called Spaghetto. I got around 20 italian players to join and play on it, but after a while the town became inactive and my members had quit because they didn't like pvping with 110 +ms. This experience still allowed me to understand how loka works and i just liked it even more. As an european town, we had set the vulnerability time in our afternoon, but we basically didn't match any other vuln time other than seagull shores so there were little to no fights. After the town fell, i've sometimes tried to join fights but they're mostly around 12pm-1am so again i couldn't play as much as i wanted to. I knew other guys were in the exact same situation as me, so i've decided trying making this work once again. When asked if he could move the host, Cryptite replied We probably wouldn't have an EU Loka until it was a standalone version just in the EU. And then to do that we'd need to have enough of a population where splitting the pop wouldn't be bad for the overall community. I was and I am decided to give the overwhelming support is needed to create an Eu Loka. This time i had created a discord server as a petition which currently has 73 members in it, 51 of those either aren't verified in the loka discord server or haven't even joined it (yes i've counted it by hand through shared servers). If you want to take a look by yourself here's the discord link https://discord.gg/HBJfqHbbxH but if you wouldn't play on the eu server please leave since we're counting on it. The main arguments against this is that it would split the community, which would be in part true but mostly false, since the community would grow getting back those european players who had left the server because of the issues i've already talked about plus the normal growth of new players a server like Loka would have. They say that already playing european players are used to the lag and won't bother moving from na loka to eu loka, but imo that's just normal and completely fine since they still have the choice on where to play. I do understand that creating a standalone loka would be time and money consuming, but it would allow more people to play on here and it wouldn't be as hard as creating a brand new server, since you already got a name, a community and plugins. I've also talked about an eu proxy, but it has already been tried and as Cryptite said, makes traffic worse typically.

I think soon enough (a year or two) this could be a viable thing to do. The main concerns I see would be the splitting of the community (which as you said would work itself out) and the amount of work an EU Loka might take to get moving. I think these are both expected and can be overcome with enough demand, however the other major issue I see is with the staff team. We do have a good bit of EU-based staff at the moment, however as far as I'm aware the majority are still NA-based. My main concern here is just that there aren't enough people to moderate it and ensure that there aren't hackers or rule breakers.

Overall I'd like to see this in the future and I think it'd really improve server quality for EU players, however I think it's still going to be a bit more time until the demand needed is reached.

We got 5 EU Staff members. The EU Staff members are Evil_X, Kxph, Magpieman, PartayArc (myself), and Thanius_. Only two I have mentioned are admins, Thanius_ and Magpieman. Magpieman being a high admin (Old One).

EU loka wouldnt really make sense with the current size of the playerbase since NA loka doesnt have a big enough EU playerbase and the EU players that play on loka wouldnt really want to move
"they dont have to move if they dont want to" EU loka would just be 5-10 players on at all time if it were to be made since most of the EU players already on loka dont mind their ping since most of them average 80-100ms, EU players also dont experience the worst ping as theres people who get more than 100ms and still play loka daily

I just don't understand how you can say that there will be 5-10 players online at all time. We're 70 in a petition of people that would play, + many many others would join if the server were to be publicly announced. I've tried asking to patawe to give this petition a spotlight, be he said he couldn't advertise something not based on facts (i do respect that). If it were to be announced surely many many new players would join

A petition of 70 people doesn't exactly garuntee 70 actives. Peeps come into the intro all the time, say they'll play actively, then disappear a few days later. Not saying these people don't want to legitimately play, however it's not a garuntee which I think is why Crypt is being cautious on this one.

We're still trying to get more people

Yeah just from my perspective it wouldn't be worth it. For the amount upheaval it would take to run an EU server I don't think it would translate or be worth the cost.

That's not to say it couldn't ever happen but I think you overestimate how popular Loka even is right now. It's just not big enough to split the player base imo.

Also, five EU orientated staff wouldn't cover enough ground especially when you consider how many more issues can crop up with language barriers and general server rules.

It's a really cool idea but I just don't think it has the practicality quite yet.

-1 Not needed, fights happen regularly with both EU and NA players coming to fights. Happens around 1-4pm est.

There is no need to split loka’s playerbase and hurt the NA server. That is also double the work for crypt to have to deal with 2 servers. I think he could find ways to improve ping though because I know during a tournament he opened up some EU proxy or smth and it helped lower some EU ppls ping

Unfortunately that was a pricy thing, we cannot afford to do that all the time at our current population and income. Others of those "quick" eu connection points were equally bad for some and slightly better for a few.

Something like this is currently part of our longer-term expansion plans, should growth permit it. However, we are not quite at that stage yet and there is plenty of extra work that this creates and logistical issues on top of costs. So it's a little bit premature for us to move in this direction just yet but certainly a possibility for the future.

I believe it's hosted in canada because of cheaper host cost but moving the host in any other place in na wouldn't change anything for eu players and they already said no to moving the host to europe.
