The problem with ascalon is that theres so place to get food fast, either you need to make a huge farm for bread or go around killing cows for a billion years.
Potatoes is the prefect solution for this. (it doesn't have to be in the marsh)

Barn works pretty well. I'd suggest instead of it working off tiles for output player activity in town effecting the total of items created would be cool to see.
