Current rank: Sentry
Which rank you are applying for: Guardian

What you think is expected of this rank: Guardians must be kind, recognizable, active players and knowledgeable tested staff members capable of handling several situations with professionalism and respect. A Guardian, at the basic level, is expected to enforce rules, assist newer players and provide an unbiased standpoint when assessing situations. Applicants must have a strong knowledge base of Lokan rules to apply for the position. Although some situations are black and white instances such as town betrayal are not, Guardians must be able to use common sense and an adept understanding of the Lokan rules to solve these situations. Guardians must also be to help out Loka as a whole. Applicants accepted to this position must first be on dev teams, server projects and the lower levels of the staff team. But most importantly, Guardians are integral members and gatekeepers of arguably the most important part of Loka, the community. Guardians should be highly recognized and easy to talk to players who can understand the community as a whole. They should remain a key member of the server even after receiving the role. The role should not act as a simple way to hide away from the community as you play but as a stepping stone to allow you to connect and further integrate yourself into Loka.

Why you think you should become this rank: I feel as if I should become a Guardian because I strive to be everything I have listed above. I have an adept understanding of the Lokan Rules, allowing for the easier distinction between right/wrong. My previous experience administering servers and sheer time put into Loka also helps with this. As of late, I have been attempting to help out with the development of Loka. As an older player, I am highly interested in ensuring that newer players have as good a time (if not better) than what I had when I first joined. A little while ago I applied for (and was accepted onto) the Lokan Development Team in an attempt to help out more around the server. Since then I have completed some projects for the Lokan community with some yet to be released. When it comes to my efforts to help out more around Loka progression to the rank of Guardian was the next logical step. I can comfortably make this jump as I feel like I am an established, engaged, experienced member of the community. As I have already stated the community is the most important part of Loka. Without it, players just wouldn’t have the same experience as they do now. (At least AFAIK) I am able to bond and communicate well with the Lokan community. Throughout my time on Loka I have attempted to keep positive relations with Lokan members, always looking to stay kind, helpful and positive with those around me. I have had the wonderful experience of playing in this community for the past two years, my time here has been phenomenal, to say the least. My acceptance to the role of Guardian would allow me to give back at least some of the care and kindness I received when I first joined :).

When you started playing on the server: Sep 05 2016
Time zone: EST
How often do you play (hours a day/week): 45(ish) hours a week. Can fluctuate based on my IRL situation but I should always be able to provide a heads up of any potential absence.

As a side note (as some of you may already be aware) I have recently bought a replacement mic so I can now talk in vc’s ;).

Red is perfect for the Guardian role, and I agree with everything in the application. I've known Red for quite a while now, and can vouch for both his understanding of the rules, and his friendly/approachable attitude. He may need to stop typing in algebraic equations, but we can work on that. Good luck Red!

Hello ladies and gentlemen. Today I will be talking about the word Opinion.

o·pin·ion
/əˈpinyən/
noun
  1. a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
"I'm writing to voice my opinion on an issue of great importance"
synonyms: belief, judgment, thought(s), (way of) thinking, mind, (point of) view, viewpoint, outlook, attitude, stance, position, perspective, persuasion, standpoint; More

    • the beliefs or views of a large number or majority of people about a particular thing.
      "the changing climate of opinion"
    • an estimation of the quality or worth of someone or something.
"I had a higher opinion of myself than I deserved"
- Google Dictionary.

So what does this have to do with Red? Well Red has a bit of a tendency to over react to opinions (at least mine) Example: I attempted to stop players from getting the horseman mask because in my opinion they should be rare It is also worth noting that these players were in an enemy town and all players had been playing for over a week. This is about the time I consider is fair for them to know that if they go out into a PVP zone it is reasonable to expect PVP (Go figure). Red's reaction: "I will come and kill you myself for killing new players." My response to this was an explanation about how they weren't new players. Red, however, only said he didn't care and the classic "How would you like it if that were you?"

TLDR: Red didn't listen to anything I had to say in place of his own opinion, refusing to provide a reason that I hadn't already argued against.

TLDR for the TLDR: -1

I wasn't going to +1 any of these apps, but you've convinced me otherwise. Red seems like a cool guy, has experience working in/with the dev team, and possesses a determination to better the new/low level player experience. +1

If you don’t want someone to get guardian I wouldn’t write a story about him wanting to be kind to new players and stop someone from letting them have a good time. A guardian needs to be able to see the bigger picture and by your example he proves that he can do that. That’s a +1 from me dog.

Also, just because you have a disagreement with someone and they don’t submit to your opinion does not mean they are somehow intolerant or ignorant. Red being willing to bluntly oppose an ally of his only bodes well for his ability to be impartial as a guardian.

+1 I have known Red for over two years now, and all the time I have known him, he has always been respectable and kind to everyone around him. He also has the will to protect new players so that they have a fun first experience with the server. I've also known him to be a great help to the server as well by contributing to the build server to make Loka beautiful along with all the other build team members. He's a great guy, and ily red. :D

So I did a poor job of explaining this. The youngest player was around 2 weeks old. All other players were over 2 months but their town was new. Which would be a fair reason to argue against me going to raid their town. But a wilds gank such as this one could have happened to a town of any age.

It's ok if he doesn't want to submit to my opinion. The problem more arises when he won't even give a reason for not submitting or being unwilling to hear my opinion. If a staff member does not value the opinion of a player there is a massive issue. I'm probably digging a deeper hole for myself but oh well. I'm not going to reply to this thread again for the sake of not spamming and also to save my dignity while I still have some. However I remain adamant about a -1.

Final note: 3 of the 8 (or so) active sentries have applied for guardian. It doesn't make sense to cut a mod team nearly in half for more admins (At least not to me.) as the mods / sentries play a crucial part in Loka without having too much power. I feel as though only one of the mods should be promoted and to me Red isn't the most qualified.

Red works to improve Loka's environment, as evident through his individual actions. He builds for server projects and is an active member on the dev team. As seen through Steve's example, he will do whatever he can to improve the general playerbase's experience through his own will, not just through administrative power. He has met the expectations for Sentry by personally messaging each person involved during chat incidents and there's no doubt he will meet the expectations for Guardian.

As for Steve, I do have a few issues.

You say he doesn't address your opinion, but you include this in your first argument:
Red, however, only said he didn't care and the classic "How would you like it if that were you?"
He's literally telling you right there, addressing your problem with their server playtime. He doesn't care about how long they've played; he saw this group of people struggling and he wanted to ensure that they have a good time playing on Loka. He asks you the question in the hopes that you'd see his point of view. Instead, you wrote it off as him ignoring your opinions. Also, I just want to state that the people in question were clearly struggling, as they were dying a lot and they were underequipped. In a case where people are having trouble and enjoyment is at risk, do server age and playtime really matter? As a community, we should seek to improve everyone's experience. And to me, it's clear that Red was looking out for the server here, while you were more interested in "keeping the head rare". It was developed as a server-wide event, for crying out loud. Let the whole server experience it and enjoy their time.
Nothing against you, just felt like it needed to be said.

i agree with sparky on this one. red is a nice color so he must be a good guardian as well. +1 or 2 or 3

This is a very well written application which shows and highlights his dedication and maturity on the server. While we don’t always agree in game, I believe that Redskillz will be an excellent guardian should he be accepted.

Red is a dedicated player to the Lokan community, he also has a deep respect for building which personally I respect that very much. He also from all my encounters with him has been very respectful. He earns my +1
