I don't disagree that guardians typically start out doing more than a normal sentry would, but it's not always in contributions such as Skuhoo's development of EldritchBot, I was just doing my sentry duties and participating in server conversations *cough*(Making Memes)*cough* before being promoted, as far as I'm aware, MrP is in the same boat as me, though he may have done some building for the server beforehand, I honestly don't remember.I guess, as I look at the questions as they're answered, I can't seem to find the real substance as to why to go for this kind of promotion.
So to start off with, there are the expectations which in this case are, in essence, the expectations of sentry. Absolutely helping out players and being unbiased are crucial parts of the role but there is very little described that differentiates the duties of a sentry from a guardian here. I get "doing what needs to be done" is supposed to cover those extra things but its just a gloss over.
As for the reasoning for becoming guardian, I find the same lack of solid foundation. What can you do or do better with the guardian rank and its permissions that isn't being fulfilled by your current role? I've read this a few times over and I've only been able to put together "helping out players whenever they need" which is, again, a bit of a gloss over.
It's entirely possible that this just comes down to perspective, but the way I've come to think of it is that you do the job before you get the job. To use Skuhoo as an example, he helped players, answered some questions. That's awesome but that's just the expectations of his sentry post. The additional contributions, Eldritchbot for example, and the obvious extra utility that comes from him having those extra permissions and expectations are what I think really drive a good promotion.
With that, I think you're an awesome guy and this is certainly a possibility some time down the line. Learn what is it to be the role, the commands, responsibilities, and do the job in order to get the job.
And with that, at least for now,
Its a nah from me dog.
Not comparing anything else other than what they've done, I think Thanius most matches up with what Gibon was doing before his promotion (again, as far as I know, he may have been making other memes for grandpa maggers and mah boi cryptoodlez) but the both of them were doing their jobs as sentries and doing work on the build team.
In the last few weeks Thanius has been doing some good work creating builds for maggers, and while it's not enforcing the rules, it's certainly going above what a sentry is expected to do (watch chat and make memes.)
Essentially, I just don't see the point of your argument, when you go immediately for the best example of exemplary work for the server before promotion, when the fact is that most people do a lot less and don't have the know-how or ability to do what Skuhoo has done with Eldritchbot. It seems like an unfair comparison in my mind.
With that out of the way, I think it's fair to say that Thanius has done well as a sentry and even better contributing to builds for the server, and I'm eager to give him a shot and see how he does as a guardian.
+1 from me
