The Ocean Update
After 5 long years...

Long memed about, long dreamed about, but now finally coming to Your Favorite Minecraft Server! We're proud to finally announce the release of the Great Ocean Update! It's quite the doozy and it's no simple update. The breadth, size, and excellence of this update will be talked about by players for hours.

The Ocean Update will release on Friday, September 29th at 3pm Server (EST). See the bottom of this post for more information about the update process.

Alrighty, there is plenty to announce so let's get into it!

New Features
Some of these features will be available very shortly after Oceans launch on friday. We're working hard to make sure they're out ASAP so that the "full" content of the oceans is available to everyone.
  • Windy Seas - Due to windy turbulence out on the seas, it is not possible to fly around in the Oceans.
    • After a week of the oceans being explored by players, we will allow flying in the shallow oceans. We just don't want everybody to explore the oceans in about 15 seconds with op elytras.
    • It will remain impossible to fly in the Deep Seas.
  • Turbulent Storms- The edges of the world are no longer simply invisible barriers, but are now impassably turbulent seas.
    • Sailing into these storms is dangerous! If you should remain sailing within a storm long enough, you will pass out, any vehicle you're riding will be destroyed, and you will wash up on a shoreline generally relative to the direction you set sail.
    • As an example, sailing north in Garama will give you an opportunity to wash up on Aladra, etc.
    • Players who enter turbulent storms and are teleported will wind up in the same area provided they do so within 30s of each other, otherwise the destination will randomize again.
  • The Waterstone (Coming soon after launch)- Time for another elemental stone!
    • While holding a Waterstone, you will be given Dolphin's Grace and your boots will be automatically given Depth Strider.
    • This makes you go very fast.
    • There are restrictions for when the stone is held and cannot be used:
      • In Combat
      • In Corrupted Water
      • Any Speed Buff will be removed when holding the Waterstone
      • and more!
    • Up to you to discover how to acquire this!
  • Sea Temple Event (Coming soon after launch) - A random event!
    • The first of our upcoming World Rift events that also happens to be the first to use our new Dungeon Tech.
    • Every few days, the temple will spawn somewhere in the ocean and will last for several hours.
    • Create and join a party of up to 5 players to enter your instance of the temple together!
    • Explore, fight crazy mobs, get blocks (below) and have a blast!
    • Sea temples will provide access to:
      • Prismarine
      • Sponges
      • Conduits
      • Trident
        • We will be adding a cooldown to how often the Trident can be used to fly (sorry gamers, it's so stupidly op).
        • It will also be subject to many of the same restrictions that you might find with Elytras
  • World Map Update (Coming awhile after launch)
    • The dynmap needs an update, and we will update it with the new ocean stuff (or however much of it will show on a dynmap)
    • As well, we indent to create a new World Map image that finally reveals the "real location" of all the continents. This is more of a fun bonus thing to do one day, however.

Forced Server Resource Pack
noice

We are now at a point where we are going to be enabling and forcing the use of the Loka Resource Pack. We are beginning to add emojis, features, effects, sounds, music and more to our server pack and we want players to have the same experience across the board. Some examples of these (some coming soon) are:Hay, Mag
  • Shards icon
  • Orbs icon
  • Loka logo
  • Prestige icon
  • Achievements icon
  • and well pretty much anything we use a weird ascii character to show at the moment

It is important to note, that we still have no plans to change the textures of blocks. We enjoy the variety of resource packs players use to change how their game looks and we're not interested in replacing the way your game world looks. The plan for the Loka Pack remains that it will be additive, and only add awesomeness to the server. Can't guarantee that we won't take a random block here and there and force a texture for a specific reason, but there are so many ways to do this in special cases that we should be able to do it well without replacing vanilla mc blocks/items/etc. This also will help our pack stay small in size. Fortunately, in modern MC, server-forced packs no longer crash players out and are a smoother experience overall.

No uggo red numbers on the side!We intend to add more to /settings so that you can enable/disable certain aspects of the pack (custom sounds to probably start with), but it will be mandatory to use the pack and we will do the common pattern found on other servers of kicking players who do not accept the pack.

The Update Process
Due to the size of the update and the amount of world processing required to bring over all the new world content, Loka will be experiencing extended downtime as we push the update:

  • Loka will go offline on Thursday the 28th at 8pm Server Time (EST).
  • Many migration processes and Things will begin
  • ???
  • Loka will come online Friday the 29th at 3pm Server Time.
    • Another reason for the extended downtime is to ensure that exactly at 3pm on Friday, we can safely turn on the server and everyone can experience the Ocean Update simultaneously, rather than just randomly say "it's up" at some point.
    • For those explorers out there we would recommend you hop on the server when it comes back online as there are lots of hidden achievements to find out in the oceans.

The update will not upgrade oceans of towns which have anything in or under the ocean to prevent anyone from losing their builds (this also goes for some ruins). We will be manually regenerating these areas by hand over the next few weeks and will likely converse with town owners regarding this. If you particularly need your ocean area upgraded quickly please feel free to reach out to an Elder.

Ok lord have mercy, welcome to the bottom of the post. We're as excited as you are!

Swim Forth!
