Which rank are you applying for?: Guardian
What do you think is expected of this rank?: Multiple things, honestly, but it boils down to a major three: a role model for the community, being level-headed in disputes, and having some kind of influence on the back-end of the server.
Whenever a new player joins the intro course, the first person they see are the Slicers, Sentries, and Guardians. Because the Guardians are at the top of this "totem poll", they're held to a higher standard of being a good role model for the community. I personally believe that Guardians should be kind to everyone, despite their personal ties on the server when it comes to conquest, as everyone, at some point in their time playing on Loka, need to come to a Guardian for help. Guardians should be easily approachable to all, and also help set the high standards for how our community should behave.
Furthermore, this also applies to being "level-headed", in disputes. No matter how we may think we act, there's no way possible to remove all bias from a person, as it's part of human nature; however, I do believe that, until Mag or Crypt can step in, Guardians have the final say in a lot of disputes on the server, and should act respectfully on both sides of an argument. One of my favorite quotes that relates to this is from To Kill a Mockingbird, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb in his skin and walk around in it." It's a much more gruesome way of saying "step into his shoes", or "view things from their perspective", but the way Atticus says this to Scout makes it memorable and applies to this situation. Again, no matter what side of conquest a Guardian is on, I personally believe they should find friends amongst all the peoples on Loka, and try to understand an argument from both points of view. Even then, a Guardian should also be able to understand when they can't avoid their own bias in a situation: should something occur that they believe they can't make a fair decision on, it'd be in the best interest for everyone for the Guardian to step away from a situation, inform the others of their possible bias, and allow someone else to address it in a more calm manner.
Finally, having input on the back-end of the server. I think, as a whole, Guardians shouldn't be expected to have influence on developing for Loka, but I do certainly think it helps. As I've been told many times before, there's a very fine line between development and administrating on a server like this, and there might be times that a Guardian is expected to have some input on Conquest, or other major systems of Loka. I personally believe that, if a Guardian has some previous experience working with more back-end projects, they'll fair better in the position of a Guardian.
Why do you think you should become this rank?: Well, let's address this step by step of what I described as the responsibilities of a Guardian.
First off, when I first joined the server, I remember having received such a warm welcome from the Aurulians, and other Lokans alike. It filled me with such a sense of joy to have gotten such a personal welcome, that I basically made myself a pact that I'd try and do that for other players as often as possible. I've been blamed on several occasions for having some kind of macro for welcoming players, but I'm sure that, as many people who have heard the loud clicking of my keyboard as a rush to type "Welcome to Loka, <player.name>! Enjoy your stay!", that it's all quite authentic. I've also had quite the laugh on several occasions, when other people try to "race" me to welcome someone, and although I think their intent might not be the best, I do enjoy the fact that, in the end, the new Lokan does feel welcomed by a spam of messages from our community (if not intimidated a bit ^^
. Regardless, it's the fact that I've tried to have a very active tie with the community as a whole, participating in server wide events and conquest, to welcoming new players, and the sort, that would help me fill the "kind" portion of what I think a Guardian should be.
Furthermore, I've heard from several people that I try to fit the "level-headed" aspect of being a Guardian (heck, I think it was most of the reason that I got Slicer to begin with ^^
. As a Guardian, I want to build upon this ability, and be able to fairly and justly help out everyone on the server, knowing when my own bias is swaying my judgement, and determining where there are merits on both sides of a situation.
Finally, having some background influence on the server: *sigh* Rip the subreddit ;-; I had some great intentions for it the last time I tried applying for this position, but they all fell through. Unfortunately, as great as it might sound, I think that, because our subreddit isn't well advertised, and it doesn't have the most active flow of content, plus being my first subreddit to actually moderate, I personally let this one slip out of my hands. However, I have shown some activity behind the scenes since then. At first, I took on the job as a Librarian, characterized by someone who thoroughly enjoys reading and writing lore. After that, Mag tasked some of the Librarian's with the Museum. Admittedly, I did let this one slip as well: I found this task was extremely daunting, as a lot of the items included in the museum were very obscure to me, and stuff that I had never even heard of in official lore. However, about two weeks before the museum was released, I tried working overtime, with Mag and Crypt, getting books up for the Museum. Now that the Museum is made, and the Time Lost Gates are open (hurray!), I intend to have further upkeep on the Museum and, just like the library, add more item descriptions and books overtime. Lastly, there's a new PvE team that's been tasked to create more events, mobs, and custom items behind the scenes, different things to expand on Loka that's not specifically Conquest or PvP based: as being part of this team, I hope to give some of my skills to help further the server, and see Loka expand overall, away from just being a PvP based server
