World Road System

Me, Zor, and Targaryen have been bouncing around ideas related to this for a little over a week now. Zor mentioned it here:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=948&start=60

but we ought to have a thread dedicated to it.

The overall idea is that, with the addition of horses to MC, we make a system of roads in the new world, allowing people to travel on horseback from place to place without the dangers of the wilderness. The roads would be lit, with fences, walls, or some sort of barrier along the sides to protect travelers from mobs. We would also make a number of rest stops by the side of the road, complete with farms, stables, beds, water, etc. The road would connect to spawn, as well as any towns who agreed to be connected. It would also meander around the continent(s), bridging rivers and ravines, etc.

However, the roads would not a cushy place for people to relax and sit down for a picnic. Thieves would probably be patrolling them, looking for travelers to kill and rob. People would do well to travel in groups, and keep watch over their horses in the stable.

I like this idea for a lot of reasons. For one, it would force people to interact and form colorful relationships. It would make a more realistically connected map, and force people to explore a little and get a little better idea of the geography of the world. It'd be a public works project, building roads and inns, which might foster a little unity on the server. It adds a new dynamic to things, and just seems really fun.

But gravel is ugly. And you people seem to think that when I say hardened clay I mean any color. Most look really bad.

And yeah, it ought to be enterable from the roadside. How does this look:

Horses can jump fences/walls easily so fence gates can be used much more sparingly for those walking.

We build castles, wield swords and bows, ride on horseback, have rudimentary irrigation, a fully developed system of phonetic writing, and a means of copying what we write that amounts to a printing press. We are at the very *least* a medieval world, and in medieval times they had roads. In the bronze age they had roads, centuries before medieval times. In Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the road that wraps around the Imperial City is called the Red Ring Road. In GoT, the road connecting Winterfell and King's Landing is called the King's Road. Neither of those had arches or stone walls along the sides, or were even lit.

It's a road. :P

If it's a road, then it oughta be cobble or something; I'm not aware of many clay roads, plus it looks so awful.

I'm actually not opposed to just making it cobble. It'd make building it much easier.

How does Zor feel about this:

TBH, The original road building material for roads connecting places to places would have been cobbles, just take a look at any pre-tarmac area in the world with roads, chances are it's cobble :)

I really like the clay look, however If the server votes against it then I would ask that the world trail not be made of cobble or gravel.

please reconsider smooth stone or wood.

Also please space out the gates a lot more and when you do place them make sure that it is two gates side by side. Horses are unable to pass through one gate alone due to their body size.

I think the world trail should be 5 wide with gravel because its a easy to obtain in mass quantities and when done right it looks good. Also the bridges should be made out of wood because its easy to obtain as well.

This thread is not forgotten, just on hold for now, to be revived when we have more active towns and people interested.

Im intrested in this idea, just like the world rail. If this becomes a thing in loka, i would be more than glad to help

That said, this can always be a player-run thing. Nothing changes that; just takes the willing. I do think the future will hold more opportunities for this, though.

Just sayin'...

We're getting an official road block in 1.9. However many months away that is.
