From the darkness, a vision appeared. She first noticed the hill, then the stunning buildings atop it. It had been years since she saw it, but it was unmistakable. Her first home, Asgard. She looked out over the terrain, ashamed to say it felt unfamiliar after all these years. The last time the neutral city had graced her sight was when she was a child, long ago. While she was deep in thought, movement caught her attention. She turned to see two children racing up the cobblestone path. She recognized herself and her childhood friend. With a sharp intake of breath, she called out to them, but they did not seem to hear her.
“Jedoi? Hall?” She tried again, using their names. There was no response. Soon, the vison shifted. She found herself in the underwater lab of the Asgardian Scientists Association. The cheerful girl she had seen moments ago was now lying in a bed under quarantine. The Blight. She thought, as buried memories of that plight resurfaced. She watched as the girl that was once her coughed painfully. She promptly turned around and was greeted by a new scene.
A group of friends on horseback were racing through the plains. They arrived at a small settlement with short stone walls. Opening the gate, they entered, and her eyes widened at the sight of her second home. The four friends dismounted, leading their horses to a stable. She followed, laying a hand on the black horse her past self led.
“Shadefire.” She muttered in disbelief. She took a step forward, looking around at the village. A smile appeared on her face, watching herself walk away with Leasaur, Lazuli, and Godemox. She heard them laughing and teasing one another. She took a step to follow them when her sight froze and changed once more.
She saw a face she had not seen in a long time. The person it belonged to donned armour crafted of diamonds and a likewise sword. She watched as that sword swung down on her younger self. The girl vanished and moments later appeared from the Town Portal, donning no armour but carrying an iron sword, determination flashing in the child’s eyes. In less than a minute, Jedoi had been killed again. She stepped back, shaking her head with fury as the raider smiled.
The vision changed again. She saw the towering walls of Dellsmite, rising far above the snowy plains and ice spikes. She smiled at the sight of the city that had been her home far longer than any other. Only happy memories played through her mind before she remembered what she would see next. She began frantically shaking her head, but the next scene was just what she feared. She saw herself once more, no longer a child, rebelling against her friend. She saw Artagan, Leasaur, and Ronshaud standing beside her, across from Lazuli and Steel. Friends, family, divided over something so insignificant. She saw her greatest regret.
She let her breath go when the scene shifted again, her sights now on Citadel. Her tired eyes gazed at the beautiful city, longing to truly be there. She knew it would be ripped from her the moment she smiled. She stared up at the incredible spire, surprised when the memories did not flow through her mind as they had in past scenes. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she opened them, her eyes beheld none other than the Observer. Preksak flew high above the Artifact, lightning thundering as his harvesters ripped the world apart.
When the next picture surfaced, she gazed stoically at her friends as they built what they thought would be a city that would someday be legend. They were wrong, and it would be no one’s fault but hers. Her friends vanished, leaving Jedoi alone staring at the now empty city. She witnessed a memory that was still fresh in her mind. She watched helplessly as the woman she was only a few months ago left Cerulean City for the last time. If only she had stayed, if only she had tried harder…
With a start, she awoke inside Makosa’s Inn. Jedoi stood up and looked out the window, pondering her peculiar dream. She witnessed the rise and fall of her previous homes. She sighed and prepared to help Lazuli for the day, but one thought was nagging at her. A thought bugging her in the back of her mind. What if I’m watching myself in a memory right now? She shook her head.
