The changes listed below are features and observations made from the recent 1.9 snapshots. Nothing is concrete and many things are likely to change before the official 1.9 release. I will only list features that are of some relevance to Loka and survival players.

Shields, RIP PvP.... The other stuff seems really cool though. I like how they're making the end actually worth going back to after the dragon dies.

Shields, as far as we know, will not change combat significantly. The main change will be if you wish to block attacks to halve damage you will have to sacrifice your off-hand slot.

Apparently the fact that the dragon could only die when perched on the End portal was a bug and this bug has now been fixed in the latest snapshot.

Also, paths not only look like 15/16ths of a block but now act as 15/16ths of a block as well meaning you can place ice under a path block and receive the speed-up effects.

A snapshot was released yesterday but there's nothing really to mention besides that beacons spawning in the ender islands was a mistake and they won't be there for the full release.

In other news...

Particles are no longer entities and do not take excessive memory or cause lag

Among other things, shields have been released into the snapshots. I'll update the thread later but the tl;dr of shields is as follows:

The block mechanic has been moved from swords to shields. If you are attacked with a sword and the sword hits the shield you take reduced damage. If you are attacked from behind or from the side you seem to take a little extra damage than you would if you weren't blocking. Any damage from arrows that hit the shield will be nullified completely. The shield has durability about equal to iron armor.
