October 27th, Day 165: Lucuma

Fruit Info: Primarily cultivated for its fruit, the Lucuma is native to the the Andean valleys of Chile, Ecuador, and Peru. Apparently it is mostly used for flavoring in various goods like ice cream, because eaten raw it’s texture is just gross

October 29th, Day 167: Pepino Melon

Fruit Info: The pepino melon grows from an evergreen tree native to South America. It supposedly tastes like a honeydew melon meets a cucumber and I don’t know how I feel about that idea. Apparently it is seldom sold outside of its native region because of the fruit difficult to transport. I can only assume this means it gets car sick really easily.

October 31st, Day 169: Jack-o'-lantern

Fruit Info: One of the iconic symbols of Halloween, there's really not much better you can get for today's fruit. The tradition is believed to have originated in Ireland where they used turnips instead of pumpkins. Depending on the story they either represented spirits, supernatural being, or were to ward off evil spirits. The jack-o'-lantern has, in more recent times, also become deeply associated with the headless horseman. Now the headless horseman has many stories spanning a long time, but the most iconic of them is probably the Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. This is where the jack-o'-lantern association comes from despite the horseman never having a jack-o'-lantern head in the story. There's a lot more I can and want to write about these things but I don't want this to be too long. Definitely go read more on these things they're super interesting and worth your time.

November 1st, Day 170: Glass Gem Corn

Fruit Info: YOOOOO ITS SO COLORFUL! This fruit is an amazing example of what selective breeding can do. In this case have resulted in what is probably the coolest looking variety of corn ever conceived. Glass gem corn, also known as flint corn, has a long history. It is one of three known kinds of corn to be cultivated by some Native American groups, a practice dating back to possibly 1000 BC or later. DID I MENTION ITS ALSO COLORFUL?!?!?!

November 2nd, Day 171: Sweet Corn

Fruit Info: Since we’re talking corn, let’s go ahead and do the other major types. Today we have sweet corn which gets its name because of its high sugar content. This sugar content comes from mutation on the gene regulating the corn’s ability to convert sugar into starch. This makes the corn more pleasant to eat by itself rather than being dried and ground up like most corns.

Today is our last of the major kinds of corn out there. I’m sure you’re tired of corn but just ear me out on this one.

November 5th, Day 174: Flour Corn

Fruit Info: See the flour corn is extremely impressive in that it is used to make corn flour. Amazing. Wow. So creative. Still better than yesterday’s abomination though.
