December 21st, Day 220: Bosc Pear

Fruit Info: Does anybody have a partridge on hand? I need one to match my fancy new pear.

The Bosc pear is today’s fruit. It ripens usually during the winter season, although it can happen anywhere from late fall through spring. It was first cultivated in France where it was named after the horticulturist Louis Bosc. The taste tends to be a fair bit sweeter than normal pears, and the texture much softer. This particular pear has no special connections to Christmas, but you can’t run a Christmas themed event in your fruit of the day thread without doing a pear.

December 22nd, Day 221; Cyclamen

Fruit Info: What is more Christmas-y than the cyclamen? Wait... You’ve never heard of it? Neither had I before today, but here we are. The cyclamen is a flowering and fruiting plant that blooms around the Christmas season. For that reason it is used as a houseplant during the season. It doesn’t have any other connections to Christmas, but that’s enough for me.

December 23rd, Day 222: Red Berry Mistletoe

Fruit Info: Have you ever seen the better of two things be the less popular? That’s basically the case with the Red Berry Mistletoe. The color of it’s fruit makes it much more festive looking than it’s traditional European counterpart. But most people neglect it for it’s white berry counterpart. Truly the saddest Christmas story yet.

December 24th, Day 223: Korean Chestnut

Fruit Info: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...
That’s certainly an iconic part of the Christmas season isn’t it? While we’ve had traditional chestnuts before, today I’d like to introduce you to one of many other kinds of chestnuts. Meet the Korean chestnut! There’s not too many important differences between it and regular chestnuts. The most notable is that the Korean version is immune to chestnut blight!

December 25th, Day 224: Fruit Cake

Fruit Info: Truly the pinnacle of Christmas themed fruits! The fruit cake is astonishingly hated for such iconic seasonal imagery.

Traditionally the fruit cake is a relatively simple cake made with candied fruits baked inside of it. It initially gained popularity as people discovered that sugar could be used to preserve fruits. The fruit cake isn’t only a holiday “treat” though, it is prepared for many different reasons across the globe. But despite this, Christmas remains still the most popular reason to subject people to it.

Lastly I’d like to discuss how the fruit cake has such an incredible shelf life. Some have been found over 100 years old that are edible or close to edible. That’s almost as old as Mag!

December 26th, Day 225: Rose Hip

Fruit Info: For today’s fruit we’ll be stepping back from the Christmas stuff (thank god I was running out of ideas). Instead we have the Rose Hip! The fruit of your common rose, the rose Hip is very overshadowed by its flower. The Rose hip is edible and even used for jams and stuff. It has some vitamins also so yay? So yeah, Rose Hip. Definitely the most hip fruit yet

December 27th, Day 226: False Pineapple

Fruit Info: Today we have the false pineapple, otherwise known as the red pineapple. It gets those names because the plant shares striking resemblance to the pineapple but the fruit is like a weird red version. It’s supposed to be edible though. That’s about all I can say though because it’s a relatively obscure plant

December 28th, Day 227: Cape Gooseberry

Fruit Info: Physalis Peruviana, otherwise known as the cape gooseberry, is today’s fruit. As of the 20th century the fruit is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions all over the world. Despite being so widespread though, it is native to the mountains of Peru and Chile. It has quite a few culinary uses, most which involve turning it into some sort of jam or sauce. I can’t find anything on how it actually tastes though

December 29th, Day 228: Clammy Groundcherry

Fruit Info: The clammy ground cherry is a species of plant endemic to North America, where it is mostly found in the eastern regions of the United States and Canada. It’s full name is Physalis heterophylla. Supposedly the plant/fruit feels clammy to the touch, giving it that wonderful name. I don’t know how a plant would feel clammy but that’s what they say. Additionally this specific species can be further divided into 4 unique subspecies based on leaf variations. Lastly while the fruit is bitter but still edible, the rest of the plant is poisonous to animals.

December 30th, Day 229: Wild Cape Gooseberry

Fruit Info: Today we have the wild cape gooseberry (Physalis minima) also known as the native gooseberry and the pygmy groundcherry. This fruit has been observed to have pain relieving properties and anti-inflammatory properties. The fruit also has a cherry-tomato like flavor when fully ripe.

December 31st, Day 230: Oroblanco

Fruit Info: Today we have the oroblanco, also known as the pomelit or sweetie. The oroblanco is a sweet citrus fruit similar to the grapefruit. The fruit grows from September to December. They are also most commonly cultivated in Israel.

January 1st, Day 231: Black Eyed Peas

Fruit Info: Our first fruit of the new year and we spend it on peas. Frustrating right? It’s not as bad as you may think though, because after searching extensively for a New Years related fruit that hadn’t been posted, these turned up. See in the southern United States it is apparently a tradition to eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day. Doing so is thought to bring prosperity throughout the year. Where this traditions started and why though? I have no clue.
As for the actual fruit? Well there’s not too much to say. It has flavor it’s not a good flavor but not bad either. It gets its name from the black spot on the seed that can actually in lots of different colors depending on the variety.

January 2nd, Day 232: Tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica)

Fruit Info: The tomatillo, otherwise known as the Mexican Husk Tomato, is a stable food in Mexican cuisine. They can be eaten raw, but are also cooked into a lot of dishes such as salsa verde. The specific taste of the fruit varies based on when it was picked in its life span. They were originally cultivated in Mexico during the pre-Colombian times, they specifically played a large part in Myan and Aztec culture. But they date back even further with fossil evidence suggesting the fruit emerged around 57 million years ago.

Fruit Info: I typed up a bit more but it got lost so here’s the abridged version. It’s a fruit with a lot of names. It’s cultivated in the Andes. Not much else. May expand on this later idk.

January 4th, Day 234: Cossack Pineapple

Fruit Info: Serving up some weird flavor and toxicity is the fruit of the day, the Cossack Pineapple (Physalis pruinosa). Most of the plant is toxic for humans when eaten. The only exception is the fruit when it has ripened to a yellow color, then it can be eaten safely. However the outer husk still remains toxic so be careful to avoid that. When eaten, however, the fruit has not just a taste of tomato but also a strong pineapple flavor to it as well (hence the common name).
