January 5th, Day 235: Autumn Mandrake
Fruit Info: The autumn mandrake (Mandagora Autumnalis) is the first of the mandrakes we’ll be talking about. This mandrake is debatably even its own species, some regard it as just a variation of Mandagora Officinarum. The roots and leaves contain alkaloids and are as such highly toxic.

January 6th, Day 236: Devil’s Trumpet
Fruit Info: The Devil’s trumpet is a fruit of great musical significance. Except not actually. Datura metel is cultivated for several purposes, primarily ornamental and medicinal. For a long one the Devil’s Trumpet was beloved to have originated in India (hence one of its other Names Indian thornapple) but actually has originated in the United States. It has since been naturalized to warm countries around the globe.

January 7th, Day 237: Sacred Datura
Fruit Info: Like most Datura, the Sacred Datura is a highly toxic species. All parts of the plant contain dangerous levels of anticholinergic tropane alkaloids. Consumption by human, pet, or livestock can easily lead to death and as such the cultivation and sale of the Plant has been banned in some regions. Some people still do consume the plant though, despite its dangers. Datura wrightii is a hallucinogen due to the psychoactive alkaloids within the fruit.

If this was ever added to minecraft, would I be able to use this with an arrow and give poison effects?
I feel like it would mostly be just a poisonous food item. Maybe you could if they let you make poison potions from it?
January 8th, Day 238: Devil’s Snare
Fruit Info: Today we have another Datura, specifically Datura stramonium. Like the other members of this particular genus, the plant is extremely poisonous and a hallucinogen. It has a whole host of nasty side effects to go with it including hyperthermia, mydriasis, and amnesia to just name a few. It has become an aggressive invasive weed in some temperate climate areas.

January 9th, Day 239: Pricklyburr
Fruit Info: It’s another Datura, specifically Datura innoxia. They’re honestly not that different. Much poison. Much delirium (quick correction apparently datura induce delirium which is slightly different from hallucinations). I’ll list all its names on Wikipedia to fill space here: recurved thorn-apple, downy thorn-apple, Indian Apple, lovache, moonflower, nacazcul, toloatzin, toloaxihuitl, tolguache, and toloache.

Fruit Info: The Datura ferox, is today’s fruit of the day. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Is it toxic?” Yes. “Does it cause delirium?” Also yes. “But is it spiny?“ Oh man have I got the fruit for you. Not only is it spiny but it has looooong spines. I mean look at these things! This is one fruit that is making sure you socially distance from it

January 11th, Day 241: Hollowheart
Fruit Info: Today we have the hollowheart which is the only species (Iochroma arborescens) in its genus. Apparently there are conflicting reports as to how edible the fruit actually is. Some claim that it can be eaten fine but excess consumption is a cause for diarrhea. Others report that the fruit is simply inedible due to bitterness or insipidity. It’s entirely possible these are both accurate as the fruit has highly variable chemistry, a phenomenon leading to much debate about if it is a single species. The plant seems to have some psychoactive characteristics where if used correctly it can be a narcotic and depressant. Lastly this is a cool picture where one branch has flowers, unripe fruit, and ripe fruit all at once.

so there you have it. But it is worth giving a shoutout to its more famous cousin, the olive.

January 13th, Day 243: Native Olive
Fruit Info: Now I know what you’re thinking, “Native Olive? Native to where?” Well the answer to that is Pakistan, Southwestern China, through tropical Asia to Australia, and various pacific islands. There’s not much else to say about Olea paniculata, it’s a pretty uneventful fruit.

January 15th, Day 245: Holly Olive
Fruit Info: The holly olive or false holly is today’s fruit. It’s full name is Osmanthus heterophyllus, and it is in the same family as the typical olives. The plant is largely unrelated to holly from what I gather but nevertheless they look very similar. Hence the name

January 16th, Day 246: Tea Olive
Fruit Info: The Tea Olive is a species of not technically the same genus as most typical olives. While it’s scientific name is Osmanthus fragrans it has additional common names of “Sweet Osmanthus”, “Sweet Olive”, and “Fragrant Olive”. It definitely lives up to this fragrant idea too, the flowers smell like ripe peaches and apricots.
