June 24th, Day 770 Malabar

Fruit Info: The name Malabar is derived from the coast of southwest India, a place known as the Malabar Coast, and that is the linguistic origin of today’s fruit’s common name. Other acceptable names for Diospyros malabarica’s fruit are Malabar Ebony, Black and White Ebony, and Pale Moon Ebony. Some of these reference the fruit’s white-ish yellow color when ripe. None of them, however, mention the fruit’s astringent nature that it often takes with past ripening.

June 25th, Day 771: Kaki Persimmon

Fruit Info: The fruit of the day today can be called by a few different names, including (but not limited to), Oriental persimmon, Chinese persimmon, and Japanese persimmon. These names have probably tipped you off already that this fruit is native to Korea, Japan, and China, where is had been cultivated for around 2000 years. Diospyros kaki has a somewhat astringent flavor that weakens as time goes on though.

July 1st, Day 777: Jackpot Fruit Machine

Fruit Info: For today, we have the Jackpot Fruit Machine. This fruit is a close relative of the previous type of Fruit Machine we’ve seen before. This one is by far the more popular of the two species though, as this one is able to bring immense wealth to anyone who is lucky enough to stumble upon one in its native habitat. Often finding this fruit extracts a toll from the finder so great that the fruit never repays it.

July 2nd, Day 778: Poison Star-Apple

Fruit Info: Diospyros dichrophylla, the poison star-apple, is a southern African fruit with a rather suspicious sounding name. This name is suspicious because ripe fruits are actually not poisonous but instead are quite edible. Although, when unripe the fruit is rich in Tannis, the fruit is not dangerous except when eaten too early.

July 3rd, Day 779: Queensland Ebony

Fruit Info: Today’s fruit is the Queensland Ebony, Diospyros humilis. It is an Australian native found largely in, you guessed it, Queensland. There doesn’t seem to be anything to remarkable about this fruit though.

July 9th, Day 785: Vasconcellea monoica

Fruit Info: Today we have yet another fruit with only 9 pairs of chromosomes. I don’t know why this is so important for this genus in particular, but Wikipedia always brings it up for them. These are also native to Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, where they may be called by one of their Spanish names like col de montaña.
