Fruit Info: Today’s fruit is a native to the western coastal areas of North America. In that habitat, Arbutus menziessi provides food to animals in the ecosystem. The plant that grows this fruit is highly resistance to sun and heat but is not tolerant of shade much at all.

August 18th, Day 821: Texas Madrone

Fruit Info: For our fruit if the day today we have the Texas Madrone, also called the Amazaquitl. It is native to Central America and to the southwestern United States. Supposedly this fruit may be edible, but it’s close relatives have narcotic properties so I don’t suggest trying to eat one. Ever.

August 25th, Day 828: Whiteleaf Manzanita

Fruit Info: For our newest fruit of the day we have the Arctostaphylos manzanita, which finally has some description of taste. Supposedly this fruit has a pleasant tartness when eaten, but be warned as the seeds can cause gastrointestinal distress when eaten in large quantities. The common manzanita has also been brewed into a cider by Native Americans.
