November 13th, Day 908: Australian Banyan

Fruit Info: Today’s fruit is Ficus macrophylia and despite that name up there on the first part of the post this fruit is just another stupid fig. It’s called the Moreton Bay Fig, and it marks our latest “not even half way through the figs” point. Why are there so many figs?

November 16th, Day 911: Small-Leaved Fig

Fruit Info: Today we have yet another fig for our fruit of the day. Because apparently there are more figs than we know what to do with. But our particular fruit, Ficus obliqua, is kind of unique in that it ripens at any time of the year. While it may peak in autumn or winter it can happen anytime.

November 18th, Day 913: Desert Fig

Fruit Info: This newest fruit of the day today is the desert fig, also called the rock fig, also called Ficus platypoda. This fruit is a native to northern Australia where it is found mainly on sandstone outcrops. According to Wikipedia this fruit can be eaten when ripe and softened which is more than can be said for a lot of fruit in this thread.

November 19th, Day 914: Banana Fig

Fruit Info: Ficus pleurocarpa is a native fruit of the tropical rainforests of northeastern Queensland Australia. The plant that grows this fig is one of the few known that is pollinated by more than one species of fig wasp. Because this fruit grows and ripens at irregular intervals it can actually serve as an incredibly valuable source of food during scarcity. For this reason it has actually been documented as saving a population of musky rat-kangaroo during a time of scarcity.

November 20th, Day 915: Heart-Leaved Fig

Fruit Info: Ficus polita, a native to the tropical forests of Africa, is our fruit of the day for today. The tree that grows this fruit is pollinated by a different species of fig wasp in Madagascar than it is on mainland Africa.

November 22nd, Day 917: Wonderboom

Fruit Info: Ficus salicifolia is the scientific name of our fruit of the day today. But more importantly it is also called the wonderboom and frankly that feels like the most important information here. Apparently this name comes from the wonderboom grove in Pretoria, one of the capital cities of South Africa.

November 23rd, Day 918: Knobbly Fig

Fruit Info: For the next fruit of the day we have Ficus sansibarica, the Knobbly Fig. This fig is another cauliflorous fig native to Africa. Cauliflorous meaning that this fruit can be grown directly from the main trunk of the tree, it doesn’t have to grow on branches. This fruit is primarily used as food where it’s from.

Moved to its own post because previously it was edited onto the above post. Idk why the forums didn’t let me make a new post last night.

November 24th, Day 919: Cranberry

Fruit Info: For our fruit if the day today we have the Cranberry. A lovely but tart fruit that I’m sure many Americans will recognize as being somewhat festively appropriate for this time of year due to the role of cranberry sauce in many American Thanksgiving dinners. This specific species of cranberry is Vaccinium macrocarpon.
