February 11th, Day 634: Solanum sibundoyense

Fruit Info: Known for its “pleasant acidulous taste” this fruit is a good and edible one for a change. Some trees produce them very sweetly while others make ones that are mostly flavorless. The fruit has also been used throughout history for various colors of dyes.

Fruit Tier: E for eat

February 12th, Day 635: Devil’s Apple

Fruit Info: Today we have Solanum linnaeanum, a tomato like fruit that is apparently pretty poisonous. It is native to several different African countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa, but is considered an invasive species in other regions like Australia, new Zealand and various pacific islands. One pharmaceutical company tried to develop a cancer drug from alkaloids extracted from the fruit, but after various trials it was found to be unsuccessful as a treatment.

February 13th, Day 636: Flannel Weed

Fruit Info: Solanum mauritianum, is another poisonous cousin of the tomato. This one is known for its strong stench that makes it even more frustrating to deal with as a type of weed. It is an invasive species in many pacific islands, Australia, New Zealand, and several southern African countries. There plant is notably toxic, and even just handling it can cause skin irritation and nausea. The fruit is toxic enough that consumption of the unripe berries has led to the death of a few people.

February 14th, Day 637: Solanum dulcamara

Fruit Info: Here’s a fruit of the day that is native to Europe and Asia but was naturalized basically everywhere else. This fruit carries with it, the odor and appearance of a tiny tomato, a toxic flesh that is really bad for humans and most livestock, and a juicy self that can only be consumed safely by some birds.

February 16th, Day 639: Twoleaf Nightshade

Fruit Info: Solanum diphyllum, is today’s fruit. It is cultivated largely for the ornamental value of the bright yellow berries. It is known as the twoleaf because the plant that grows the fruit has exactly two leaves that grow from one bud. Also continuing our recent trend, they are poisonous to humans.

February 18th, Day 641: Solanum galapagense

Fruit Info: Today we have another type of wild tomato. It boasts being only one of two species of tomato native to the Galápagos Islands. It occurs mostly on coastal regions that were formed by lava. This proximity to the coast has also made it’s parent plant super sat tolerant.

February 19th, Day 642: European Black Nightshade

Fruit Info: This lovely berry is the fruit of Solanum nigrum, the European black nightshade. The fruit has been useful for centuries. I’m 15th century China for instance, the berries were considered a famine food. In India the berries are casually grown and eaten but not for commercial use largely. Among the Abagusii in Kenya, the fruit and plant are considered a delicacy. It has also been used to treat varying medical ailments since Ancient Greece.

February 20th, Day 643: Wonderberry

Fruit Info: Today we have the umsobo, a relative of the tomato and a type of heirloom fruit. For a long time it was believed to have been a hybrid bred fruit from two similar species, but later clear evidence showed that it was an old species grown and used in its own right. Solanum retroflexum is bland in flavor and often eaten in some sugary dish to offset it. It is also poisonous when unripe which is neat I guess.

February 21st, Day 644: Cannibal’s Tomato

Fruit Info: Rather than try and expain this weird name myself I will instead just post the entire Wikipedia article.
“Solanum viride, the green nightshade, garland berry, cannibal's tomato, poroporoor boro dina, is a species of flowering plant in the family Solanaceae It is native to a number of south Pacific Islands, and has been introduced to Hawaii. In Fiji at the time of contact, human meat was cooked wrapped in its leaves, and a condiment for the meal was made from the fruit.”

February 22nd, Day 645: Wolf Apple

Fruit Info: Solanum lycocarpum, is today’s fruit and it is also called the wolf apple. According to Wikipedia that is because it makes up 50% of the names wolf’s diet and I don’t feel like fact checking that. The inside of the fruit is soft and sweet with a slight yellow color.

February 24th, Day 647: Solanum americanum

Fruit Info: The American Black Nightshade continues the ongoing saga of tomato cousins being toxic and fairly not tomato like. Eating unripe berries has lead to death and even the ripe berries possess toxic glycoalkaloids. This fruit is also one of the most widespread of its genus and is super morphologically variable, which makes its toxicity even more awkward.

February 26th, Day 649: Garden Huckleberry

Fruit Info: Today we have the Garden Huckleberry, Solanum scabrum, which is native to, uhhhh, well, we don’t actually know. It was once believed by Charles Linnaeus to have originated in Africa, but the plant also occurs in North America and assorted random countries. These berries are pretty much just harvested for their use in dye.

February 27th, Day 650: Koi Fruit

Fruit Info: While extremely popular, the famous Koi Fruit is a bit of an odd one. It’s native habitat is hard to describe as it largely just lives anywhere you put it. It is known for its ability to add tremendous aesthetic value to anywhere it grows. It has also been an important part of many old stories and legends of brave heroes and their quests. Rubrofuscus triplumnullaunus, unfortunately lacks any documented reports of flavor.

February 28th, Day 651: Solanum caripense

Fruit Info: Rarely cultivated, this fruit is thought to possibly be the wild ancestor of the similar looking pepino fruit. Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Bolivia make up the native range for this fruit. The tzimbalo apparently has a similar flavor and texture to the pepino, just somewhat less tangy and less juicy.

March 1st, Day 652: Cocona

Fruit Info: Solanum sessiliflorum, is yet another tomato cousin that we get to deal with. So many tomato cousins... This berry is native to South America where it is occasionallt cultivated for human consumption, but not usually. It can take anywhere from 9 months up to 24 months for the plant to grow ripe fruit after its previous batch.
